When I purchased this DVD, I thought I was ordering John Wilson's most recent as it was marketed as 2012, however I was very disappointed as it turn out that it was made in 2009 during the 2009 proms season, and was one that I already had in my collection. Buyers beware that it is not from the 2012 proms season.

Was o.k, but unfortunately it wasn't the one that I ordered. I wanted the 2012 proms d.v.d with John Wilson

The music is great, but it's exactly the same as the proms in 2012.So I now have 2 DVD the same . You don't know until the cellophane wrapper is off and read the inside of the cover. Can't fault John Wilson and his orchestra, only the contents

Avoid the CD. This DVD is what you want! 23 Oct. 2012

There are segments of this sensational 2009 Proms concert posted on youtube, which served as my introduction to John Wilson and his brilliant orchestra of hand-pick virtuoso musicians. As an American, I never heard of John Wilson before I stumbled upon these youtube clips. But I could easily tell that John Wilson and these musicians and singers not only understand, but also fully appreciate this material. I was hooked instantly.

Everyone is in top form and having a lot of fun here. You never get the sense of listening to staid and stuffy interpretations played by classical musicians who are "slumming" between performances of Mahler symphonies. And as the audience begins to realize they are witnessing something truly special, you can't help but be caught up in the joy and excitement yourself. You may quibble over the choices of a couple of the solo singers (Yes, I'm talking about Sarah Fox and Sir Thomas Allen) and wonder whether or not their vocal styles really fit the material at times, but somehow it all works. I don't want to overstate the importance of this concert or the quality of the material. Because yes, this is generally light and frothy music. But it's also genuinely complex and interesting in these authentic arrangements which John Wilson has meticulously reconstructed almost from scratch. There is art here. This is American "popular culture" at its aspirational high point before the "culture" was removed and "pop" began its long and dismal descent into gansta rap.

As far as this DVD goes, it appears to be the full concert as presented by the BBC on British TV complete with a pair of uninformative and slightly irritating presenters who step over the beginning of a few of the numbers. The video is a little soft, but the audio track is near perfect. (You have to love the acoustics of the Royal Albert Hall.) There are NO extras on the DVD.

A special warning: EMI has also put out a CD of the John Wilson Orchestra, "That's Entertainment", with nearly identical cover art to this DVD and containing many of the same numbers heard in this concert. However, that CD is a later studio recording, not a soundtrack of this concert. It sounds horrible and should be avoided if you care about sound quality.

DVD IS OVER TWO HOURS, NOT 90 MINUTES! 27 Sept. 2012
By P. Wolske - Published on Amazon.com

The Amazon product description says this DVD is 90 minutes, which is incorrect. Actual running time (as stated on DVD case) is 124 minutes. This is by far the best and most exhilarating concert I've ever seen. Who would think the "Broadway Melody" number from Singing In The Rain would be a knockout, (the audience breaks out in applause in the middle!) but it is. If you like this type of music even a little, do yourself a favor and order this.

A Magnificent Concert--God Bless John Wilson & MGM! 14 Oct. 2012
By Roger Blunck - Published on Amazon.com

This DVD is full of MGM musical magic. John Wilson has done a magnificent job bringing to life music from the classic MGM musicals exactly as they originated (with singing chorus & vocals). This is quite an accomplishment as much of the original material had been destroyed. It's obvious the man loves his work. Simply watch as he conducts. He's like a kid in a candy store. The orchestra outdoes itself enjoying the challenge of the MGM arrangers with audience and players amazed that something from 1943 sounds as good today as it did then. There are points where the audience can't help but burst into applause. There is such joy in the delivery it surrounds and takes you to a unexpected musical high. Thank God they captured this on DVD. When it was shown on PBS it was cut. This is the complete concert. The singers do a fine job with a couple of exceptions. But if you know this material as well as I do you can't help but long to hear the voices of Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Jane Powell, Ann Blyth etc. delivering their songs. There's no doubt it was an era of magnificent musical talent and will never be again. This is a wonderful reminder of what true music magic can be. Look, listen and enjoy. And God bless John Wilson for his hard work and reminding us that, even though some 60-years have passed, it has endured and still sounds great.

I viewed this DVD more than twice in 24 hours after I received it from Amazon. I love MGM musicals and this DVD contains all the best musicals there ever been. I not only enjoy all the tunes but they brought me back to the days when my mother first brought me to see them in theaters. If you like musicals, you should have it in your collection. Once in a while you should play it again and it will bring tears and joys to you. A Must Buy DVD.
