4.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful 24 Jan 2011

With this kind of compendium the extracts from modern and ancient classical spiritual writings are bound to be very mixed. Among them are some real gold nuggets (I was surprised, for example, at how good some of St Augustine's passages were). As a companion to the Daily Office, I've found it (over about 4 months) very valuable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking daily readings 4 Nov 2007
By Pamela B. Garrud VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
Have you bought the usual daily reading magazines in your neighbourhood Christian book store and wished that you could have something really thought-provoking every day? Then this is the book for you and well worth the cost.

The readings in this book are taken from great Christian theologians and Spiritual writers; there are many entries from the 'Church Fathers' as well as entries by recognised modern Christian leaders. Although I've not always agreed with or liked everything I've read (I'm not a big fan of 'The Cloud of Unknowing' for example), all the entries are stimulating and probably deserve to be read even if a person disagrees with them.

Each daily reading is arranged according to the liturgical year; for example, 'Tuesday after the Fifth Sunday in Trinity' but the readings don't direcly align with the lectionary. In my mind, the one drawback is that the book only provides daily reading material for one year, but I reckon that all the entries deserve annual re-reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars A remarkable resource 6 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover
We have used this book at Evening Prayer for many years now, to provide the 'second reading' following a New Testament first reading. It is remarkable how often the words are timely and provide penetrating insight and food for thought & spiritual growth. Yes, of course, as with any collection there are 'duds' - but I suspect that what counts as a 'dud' for me counts as wonderful for someone else, and vice versa. The duds are overwhelmingly compensated for by the times when the book hits something out of the park (or the church in my case). Yes it is expensive, but I haven't often felt that there was money better spent.
