I love Lucia! She's my special friend although she doesn't know it. I've followed her from the Times, via the Financial Times and now through her books. The latest, Celebrate, makes Christmas preparations easier and so much more pleasurable. I've made some of her suggested purchases and tried the recipes - from luxury cottage pie to Christmas winter ice-cream. A book for the bedside, whatever your pocket, to dip into, for those special times.

This author (whose columns I have avidly followed) has come in for some stick about her Londoncentic recommendations and the expensive nature of her suggestions.

I have relocated from London to Sussex, so it is not nearly as easy to get to small boutiques, beauticians or dressmakers (or to consider visiting them at least; even if I am actually restrained by budget as I was when living in London & could get to them easily). What I love about this book is the air of tried and tested advice. The author has not always been able to afford luxury. It is packed full of useful information that you can follow or disguard at your leisure. The spirit of the book is one of helpfulness, passing on small jewels of guidance and ideas gleaned from many different and fascinating sources. What is not to like? At no point are you told you must do or follow anything and should you choose not to bother one must be an abject failure. A really positive reference book. Some special occasions happen only a few times (if at all) so useful insights and advice can only be helpful and useful. There are also many alternative cheaper ideas as well as high end ones. I eagerly awaited the publication of this book and was not disappointed.
