5.0 out of 5 stars A Scottish Review 26 May 2013
By FJM
Format:Hardcover
I live on the Outer Hebrides and was delighted to find this book in Waitrose (price £10) so my review isn't a verified Amazon purchase and I am proud of this. I use Amazon for Island living convenience but take little pride in confessing this. I have read the press and indeed @Pippatips (parody) on Twitter. I love the book and from a Scottish point of view, Pippa ticks the celebration boxes. Beyond recipes ANTA is perfect for Scottish celebratory style. Most of the recipes serve eight, which is perfect for entertaining. Finnan haddock is noted for Cullen Skink but smoked haddock, a more available substitute, is suggested as an alternative. I like recipe books that suggest helpful ingredient replacements, thereby making accessibility of ingredients easy for rural folk. There are tips for children hanging around at Hogmanay to see in the New Year, which is realistic and family, inclusive; it goes with my feel of the book. Celebrate is more than a collection of recipes. The inclusion of Burns' poetry (in the Scottish section) is not original (there is mention of the Wee, sleekit, cowran, tim'rous beastie, which I love, if not in my kitchen) but the literary reference has been researched. Within the recipes, style and party games; A. A. Milne's Winnie -the -Pooh pops up as well. Anybody who gave this book one star is harsh for this reason alone.Bravo Pippa Middleton and good luck with your Waitrose column.

1.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for a good laugh! 12 Nov 2012
Format:Hardcover
I read most of this book over a coffee in Waitrose. I paid for the coffee.

It was most informative. I learnt that turkeys are quite large and therefore useful for feeding a lot of people at Christmas.

This is a turkey in every way but nevertheless hilarious.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drop the inverted snobbery! 8 May 2013
Format:Hardcover
Affordable, achievable, pretty celebration ideas, charmingly photographed, all written by someone who has actual knowledge of her subject, having worked for her parents' party business for years. Why are people SO cruelly critical of this book, and of Pippa for writing it? Society apparently deems it acceptable for ghastly, talentless 'celebrities' to write volume after volume of cringingly revealing memoirs with a ghost writer, but not for a decent girl to write about a subject which she clearly knows about, cares about, and from which the reader can pick up many simple, fun and wholesome ideas for entertaining family and friends. I agree that the writing in some places can be a little gauche, and not every single idea is original but I imagine this would be the responsibility of the Editor to correct. Pippa has written a good book, and it will take a respected slot on my cookbook shelf. So she has a Royal connection- get over it folks, and see this book for what it is: a pretty, helpful book, cheerful and jolly, and a nice gift, or as an addition to your cookery books.

1.0 out of 5 stars Try write your own 20 Dec 2012
By Toddy
Format:Hardcover
This book is stuffed full of useful tips, but I think she missed a few:

1.If you are cold, put on jumper.
2.If you are having fireworks, remember to look up as this is where the explosions happen
3.Whilst having a bonfire, remember to keep checking your house isn't also on fire, as the two smell alike
4.Remember, Panda's start out small but can quickly grow to be very large and unruly so they may not be an appropriate Christmas present
5.If you are struggling for party tips, you can always hire a ghost writer, or if you cannot afford a ghost writer, try using Google.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very simplistic 29 Oct 2012
Format:Hardcover
This a very glossy book which is well illustrated. There are tips and recipes included for seasonal celebrations.

If you are a person with a modicum of entertaining and cookery skills then this is not the book for you. It is very simplistic in it's approach. Pippa almost insults the intelligence of the reader at times.

If you are a complete novice then you might find the advice and recipes useful but there is very little in it that you could not find already on the Internet. The book lacks substance and in my opinion there are much better recipes for celebrations in the plethora of cookery and entertaining books that are already out there.

I have a large collection of cookery/entertaining books and after browsing through Celebrate in Waterstones I don't think that it adds anything to what has already been written.

I suppose that if you are interested in the royal connection you may feel that you want to own this book. However anyone considering paying an extortionate price for a signed copy should consider whether it is really a good investment.

I think that I will be following the year through with Nigel Slater's new book rather than Celebrate. He shows some real passion for food.

1.0 out of 5 stars Utter rubbish 12 Nov 2012
Format:Hardcover
You would think, with the amount of PR and media interest in the author of this book, that she might have written her book carefully, or perhaps even taken some expert advice. Seemingly, not so. For reasons best known to Miss Middleton, she has travelled the globe, shamelessly promoting an unbelievable pile of rubbish.

The book is uninspiring, verging on insulting. Did she really think we would need to be advised to serve turkey at Christmas, and haggis on Burns night? Really?

I don't know who the target audience of this book is, because I can't imagine it would benefit anyone living in planet earth. Maybe an alien who wanted a quick rundown on what the uninspired human middle classes do on special occasions? But then again, if I were an alien, I'd be looking for an altogether classier tome and would give this one a wide berth.
