In the awe-inspiring Teatro Olimpico,Vicenza, Cecilia Bartoli, recognised as one of the best singers of our time, gives the most outstanding recital of work from a variety of composers such as Caccini, Schubert, Handel, Vivaldi, Bellini, Donizetti,Mozart, Rossini, Viardot and Bizet.
Such a huge variety of work is explored in this performance, that it would take too long to review each song individually. However the highlights of this video (which includes the entire performance unlike to accompanying CD of the same title) include Cecilia's breathing life into Caccini's 16th century love songs, the dazzling colloratura in Vivaldi's "Agitata da due venti" and Rossini's "Riedi al Soglio", and the timeless beauty of her performance of Handel's "Lascia la spina". However, this is only the beginning, she delights the audience by bringing a distinct spanish feel to the evening, singing in spanish, flamenco dancing and playing the castanets. And for the first time, beguiling the audience with an interpretation Bizet's famous Seguidilla from Carmen.
I would highly recommend this video even to those that have a full collection of her CD's as it includes pieces which have not been recorded onto CD. It would also bring a great deal of pleasure to anyone who would like to sample some of Cecilia Bartoli's amazing artistry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Live in italy - A must own Bartoli DVD 9 Dec 2008
I bought this purely on a friend's recommendation. It's fantastic. If you only by one Bartoli DVD, it's got to be this one!

This is quite a substancial DVD, with 20+ songs on it. Everything from Caccini to Viardot is represented here, as well as material from Cecilia Bartoli - An Italian Songbook disc. Bartoli's performance is excellent throughout, as always.

Musical highlights for me include: Handel's "Lascia La Spina"; Vivaldi's "Agitata da due venti"; and one of the best interpretations of Carmen's "Seguedille" - I have ever seen (encores section)

Bartoli is joined on stage by Jean Yves Thibaudet for some tracks. This musical collaboration is a joy to watch. These two internationally renowned soloists create a formidable, but relaxed musical atmosphere - presenting the music in its best light. A must buy for all Bartoli fans.

This recital is in two contrasting parts. During the first part Bartoli is accompanied by the accomplished Baroque string orchestra of Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca and this consists of arias by Caccini , Handel and, most spectacularly, the Agitata da due venti of Vivaldi.

The remainder of the recital is accompanied by Thibaudet on piano who is attentive to every detail throughout and is a very sympathetic and skilful accompanist. This part of the recital has a much wider range of repertoire and strays beyond the Baroque era into the classical works of Rossini but mostly concentrates on Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini. All of these items are despatched with skill, sensitivity and good humour. The generous selection of encores brings the recital to a triumphant conclusion. Bartoli playing to the home crowd so to speak!

All of this is caught well by the camera which provides crisp imaging throughout. The sound is equally fine and is supplied in both surround 5.1 and stereo formats. There is a booklet provided with sung texts translated into English, French, German and Italian.

In summary, this recital can be strongly recommended as a particularly enjoyable experience and should give much pleasure to all purchasers, and not just Bartoli fans! In my opinion, this disc is easily worth the full 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bartoli fan 4 Mar 2012
Cecilia Bartoli is the intelligent person's opera diva. She has the most fantastic voice, has the passion and also the 'nous' to enchant both the pure listener and also the thinker. How a mezzo-soprano can be an excellent coloratura I don't understand, but she just is.She always looks as if she is actually enjoying her singing and this gives the listener added pleasure
