Having read and enjoyed Mr Louvish's biography of Laurel and Hardy and having also read and endured his biography of W.C. Fields I wasn't sure what to expect this time. As a big fan of silent and early cinema I was looking forward to finding out more about the part DeMille played in cinema's early days.
Sadly, within a couple of chapters I knew I was in for a disappoinment. DeMille's life and anything outside of one of the films he was making is glossed over, rushed through and almost ignored. Every chapter is devoted to a long and eventually quite dull review of his next film. Mr Louvish has clearly done his research and watched all the films, but I wanted to know about DeMille the man and this book doesn't deliver.
Anyone wanting to know, in minute detail, the plots of all his films than this book is for you. If, on the other hand you want to know about DeMille's life than you're just as well reading Wikipedia
