Just to throw in another opinion to help out any prospective buyers, you should know that despite what the box cover says, and how psychy it looks, there's little psych here. By psych I mean the typical contents of Perfumed Garden or Permanent Dream Discs 1 to 3 for example, as opposed to the contents of say the Harvest or Decca boxed sets, which is clearly prog. This set is not bad but falls short of 5 stars (3 and a half would be more accurate) for a number of reasons. Firstly, the 'psych' tracks are ones which I would expect most psych fans already have. These are found on CD1, although a lot of them are to me just 60s pop. The Status Quo tracks are about the closest thing to true psych, and are classics of the genre, but who doesn't have those already? It was a mistake to include the Donovan tracks. I like Donovan and I'm sure most psych fans have at least a compilation of his if not his actual albums, and don't need yet another copy of Season of the Witch or Hurdy Gurdy Man. If we must have Donovan, how about something a bit more obscure or psychy of his than these old favourites?

CDs 2 and 3 venture into prog territory, but frankly it seems that all the great prog bands had already been snatched up by Vertigo, Harvest, Island, Charisma and Decca, and labels like Pye had to settle for the best of the rest, which in some cases were not that great. I can understand the frustration of the other reviewer, as a number of these songs, from third division bands like Titus Groan, Pluto, Quiet World, Trifle, Icarus, etc, come over as those rambling prog songs that never seem to end, with unappealing riffs endlessly repeated in different variations, with little that could be considered catchy or appealing.

This is another very good underground rock "label box" selection similar to the box dedicated to Deram/Decca, Island, Vertigo, Harvest and other labels. It's a good mix of great tracks and lesser ones but everything is interesting, and the box is beautiful with the informative booklet. Hope other boxes like this will be forthcoming (after the Charisma one, why not a Virgin one?, or a Brain or OHR one for not UK labels?). Enjoy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Approach with caution. 31 May 2011
Really disappointing for me. Much of the music on here strikes me as being mediocre and I speak as a collector of psychedelia of many decades standing.
Credit due for the box and presentation but really, in this day and age the collector should expect and get more for,m a compilation like this.
Sorry Guys. Must try harder, as my headmaster used to say....
