Product Description

This is the World Première Recording on DVD of Cavalli’s opera Il Giasone. The plot is loosely based on the story of Jason and the Golden Fleece, but the opera contains many comic elements too.

In the wake of Monteverdi, opera was enjoying a real boom in Europe and Francesco Cavalli was one of the most successful Venetian opera composers. Il Giasone was the single most popular opera of the 17th Centur y.

This 2010 production from Antwerp is orchestrated and conducted by the internationally reputed baroque specialist Federico Maria Sardelli. It is directed by the young Frenchwoman Mariame Clément, who is currently making a name for herself with her infectious directing in German and French opera houses. The title role is sung by the promising French countertenor Christophe Dumaux.

5.0 out of 5 stars High camp on the high seas 10 Oct 2012
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a thoroughly enjoyable, if slightly odd, production of a little performed Cavalli opera. The action takes place on a (more or less) single set but there is so much going on within that set that it never becomes boring. It is also a somewhat surprisingly sexy performance but tempered with a high degree of camp which seems to suit these sometimes rather bawdy early works. The entry of Jason and Medea on their ship at the beginning of Act 2 has to be seen to be believed - Jason's costume alone is a riot! Kudos to countertenor Christophe Dumaux for managing to encompass so many aspects to Jason's character (ridiculous, pathetic, sometimes heroic, swaggering and sexy) whilst also singing extremely well. I also very much enjoyed Katarina Bradic as a glamorous Medea (looking a bit like Minnie Driver) and Andrew Ashwin in the dual roles of Ercole and Oreste. I have absolutely no idea why Filippo Adami was costumed like a hare as Demo unless it was to illustrate his unbalanced state of mind but it just added to the overall madness of the production.

I very much enjoyed this and the running time flew by. I would recommend this DVD/Blu Ray.

4.0 out of 5 stars cavalli on stage 9 Aug 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Well packaged and delivered swiftly. With so few Monteverdi operas that have survived it is a treat to be able to enjoy so many of Cavalli's operas on dvd. This one is very well sung, the orchestra is excellent and the quality of the recording is good. I am however not yet convinced that the staging is satisfactory. A modern quayside junk yard is not what I would have chosen and the costumes are weird. But enjoyable none the less.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real joy to watch and to listen to 27 Jun 2012
Format:Blu-ray
This is a real discovery of a gem of an opera by cavalli. Enthusiastic young singers and a production which highlights both the fun and the drama of the work.

Also the technical quality of the blu-ray is outstanding.
