The Dog's Bellocks, 9 Nov 2006
This review is from: Cautionary Verses and Ruthless Rhymes (Hardcover)
Being a lifelong Belloc fan I've bought a few of the latest crop to compare and to delight my godson, a fan of strewellpeter- Landale's '21st Century Cautionary Tales', Otttley's Cautionary Verses' and Addison's 'Cautionary Tales'.
Addison's is colourful, the ideas imaginative but the verse is often clumsy and unpolished: (with his friends this affectation, met distinct disapprobation, though they kept to themselves, to avoid his indignation) It's clever and makes good use of stereotypes but too longwinded to be really engaging. But his Civilisation series on Radio 4 sits on my ipod. Stars ***.
Landale's is awful- it looks the most authentic but the lines are clunky, the scansion appalling (and thus John keeps his derriere, forever in a wheelchair) and the rhymes gratingly basic (all day long-there she sat, no wonder she became so fat). A christmas Turkey of a book. Only *.
Ottley's book of cautionary verses is by far the best, which they should be as he claims to be a full time bard- sometimes to be heard on Radio 4 of a Sunday morning. The poems have a natural flow and the subject matter is gleefully black- If only Nathan would rid us of George W B... This is a triumphant effort and the dog's Bellocks, as opposed to Addison and langdale's doggerel. Do not be deceived by the covers of these as to their calibre. Stars *****

Uniquely Outstanding and Horrid Humour!, 26 Sep 2006
This review is from: Cautionary Verses and Ruthless Rhymes (Hardcover)
This is a horrid book! Having grown up on Hilaire Belloc and Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes I loved it. It's like a hybrid of the two only much darker. Hideous teenagers getting dispatched in deservedly gruesome ways - being eaten by polar bears, beheaded, bitten by deadly snakes, squished in car crushers and fried on overhead electricity cables. It's a heartwarming read and certain to become a classic, the rhymes are a joy, as are the jokes, particularly the chicken in the library. Definitely one for the Xmas "book, book, book!" list. Well done Charlie Ottley.

horrid torrid forehead; great rhymes for deserving rotters, 10 Oct 2006
This review is from: Cautionary Verses and Ruthless Rhymes (Hardcover)
Audibler than Auden, Better than Belloc, Crabbier than Crabbe etc., this collection of cautions from the bungee-bouncing bard, Charlie Ottley, will get YOU jumping for joy. You are bound to laugh yourself into a much better mood with his insights, his crazy syncopated lines and rhymes; and his untrammelled observations on laziness, love, life - and all the other ells - by way of his excellent verse. Everyone, from child to adult and back will hope for this to be in their stocking at Christmas; so thats quite a few presents sorted. And the drawings are very funny too.
