Product Description

For readers of any age, a witty and strikingly irreverent collection of moral guidance Most notable among prolific English satirist Hilaire Belloc's writings are the sharp and clever admonishments he composed for children. Collected here and illustrated to wonderful haunting effect by Edward Gorey, these short, funny pieces offer moral instruction for all types of mischief makers--from a certain young Jim, "who ran away from his nurse and was eaten by a lion," to the tale of Matilda, "who told lies and was burned to death"--and add up to a delightful read for any fan of Roald Dahl or Shel Silverstein.

It was such a pleasure to read this book again. It was a staple of my childhood, and many of the hilarious (and wildly politically incorrect) verses are stuck forever in my memory, as are the quirky illustrations. Hilaire Belloc is ridiculously xenophobic, but - provided you can excuse him on the grounds that he wrote it in a very different age - wonderfully funny.

This is a book for a child aged around 8-10 (and for retarded adults like me) with a good sense of humour and history, and a strong feeling for words. I gave it to the son of a friend, and was delighted to see how much he enjoyed it.

The verses are of course superb. It is a shame that they do not include
the splendid illustrations by "B.T.B." which accompanied the edition I was brought up on. If they had, this would get five stars!

Nice gift 24 July 2009
Format:Hardcover
A nice gift but not really a modern looking book. I loved cautionary tales as a child and wanted to share with nephew and friends children and this book was ok but a bit old fashioned - I think I would've liked a more modern book so that they'd be more likely to choose to pick it up and read it. The pictures are good but line drawing style. Having said all that, my friend's little boy loves the story of the boy & the lion!
