Book Description

1 Jun 2009
'Pitched as an antidote to the 'modern slavery' of Blackberry's, mobiles etc, Jon Savage's memoir of navigating the pre-gentrification Docklands with Derek Jarman is a highlight, while poignant pieces about epic canoe trips, ice-skating through the Fens and innumerable idyllic tributaries constitute an extended billet-doux to the landscapes and idiosyncrasies of the British Isles' - (4 STARS) - "Mojo" magazine. From the Thames to the Telford, the Wear to the Wellsbourne; from canoe adventures to ice-skating, from angling to day-dreaming, "Caught by the River" is an exceptional new take on nature writing. Here, the writers take you on a journey down some of our most famous waterways and some of its best kept secrets. Funny, surprising, delightful and poignant, they all share one thing - a passion for the rivers of Britain and Ireland. The result is a uniquely modern take on an age old writing tradition - a rock 'n' rock nature book ever. The authors, many acclaimed and the rest soon to be, each contribute to a collection of writing as varied and unexpected as the rivers themselves. This evocative anthology of the best new nature writing is presented in a collection of essays on some of our favourite rivers, covering the entire length of the country. A diverse collection of authors share their thoughts, experiences and reminiscences on the river that means something special to them. Contributors include Gavin Pretor-Pinney who retraces a canoe trip his grandfather made 60 years ago, Roger Deakin writes about the history of ice skating in the fens, Jon Savage describes a trip down the Thames with the Sex Pistols, Irvine Welsh recounts the courtship rituals witnessed by the River Forth, plus there are many more contributors including Bill Drummond, Edywn Collins, John Niven, Jarvis Cocker, and Chris Yates to name a few.

About the Author

Jeff Barrett, Robin Turner and Andrew Walsh are the team behind the angling and music blog Caughtbytheriver.net. Their day job is running the independent record label Heavenly Recordings. The book is illustrated throughout with the woodblocks of the artist and writer Robert Gibbings. One time owner of the Golden Cockerel Press and author of numerous books about rivers such as Sweet Thames Runs Softy Gibbings work perfectly completes the mood of the book.

I bought this book for my dad for father's day and he raved about it so much that i bought a copy for myself too. It's a really lovely object, beautifully printed and with gorgeous illustrations and a really diverse collection of writers and writing. Neither my dad nor I sit by rivers for very long and are more likely to walk along by them than try and fish anything out of them. Nevertheless the writing transcends that starting point and it is the feeling of getting away from it all and re-engaging with whatever bit of natural oasis and the solace and adventure to be found there that comes across. Lots (though not all) of the writing is by music writers, musicians and music fans and, whilst showing the same passion for both nature and music, they offer a really original take on a genre, i.e. nature writing, I haven't really been into before. A proper gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars great outdoors 16 Jun 2009
Format:Hardcover
Lovely collection of writing on british rivers from some better known names like Irvine Welsh, Jarvis Cocker, Jon Savage, Gavin Pretor-Pinney alongside some people that were new to me like Dexter Petley (one of my favourites). perfect summer read ideally suited for the riverbank rather than beach.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating river reveries 10 July 2012
Format:Paperback
Really enjoyed this beautifully produced collection of 30-odd pieces based around rivers. There are contributions from rock activists such as Jarvis Cocker, Edwyn Collins, Bill Drummond and Underworld's Karl Hyde - alongside the poet Alice Oswald and the angler-sage Chris Yates. I particularly enjoyed Irvine Welsh on The Black River, the waterways around Edinburgh. And Frank Cottrell-Boyce, screenplay writer for 24 Hour Party People on a troubled bit of boating on the River Annan in Cumbria.
