Singer / songwriter and guitarist Kristin Hersh founded Throwing Muses as a teenager in the early 80s. She released her first solo album Hips and Makers in 1994 during a break from the band, which went on to swiftly outsell all her previous efforts. Hersh continues to record and perform in Throwing Muses, her other band 50FOOTWAVE and as a solo artist. Cats and Mice captures a unique solo performance presented complete and unedited, recorded amid the lush acoustics of San Francisco s fabled jazz club Yoshi s. The set list draws deep from the well of Appalachian folk songs and murder ballads that her grandparents taught her, which typically feature in her rare Shady Circle appearances at people s homes. Bantering with and even taking requests from the faithful audience, she performs stunning versions of songs from her solo career (from Hips and Makers up to 2010 s upcoming Crooked), and even a couple of Throwing Muses favorites. Several make their first appearance on any Hersh release here!

Quality live recording of a Kristin Hersh concert from 2009. It is an officially licensed recording, the first release on this new label. The set list is interesting and varied, including (among others) songs from "Learn to Sing Like a Star" and some traditional murder ballads! Kristin's delivery is raw yet sweet. A fine addition to any fan's collection and a decent introduction for the curious.

An excellent stop-gap before Kristin's next album.A live recording where the sound quality is very good,deep rich guitar sounds and clear vocals. You can hear everything she says and most of the banter from the crowd. And of course, every note she plays! 19 songs from through-out her career.A couple of Throwing Muses songs included and several songs by request from the audience. And a beautiful version of Your Ghost.

Full disclosure. I am one of those that listens (purchases) everything Kristin puts out. I'm a big fan. For those who are familiar with Kristin's work, this will not disappoint. For those that are not familiar, this is as good as place to start as any other release. She has never really put out anything that wasn't really, really good. I am also a sucker for music that has been stripped down to just singer and guitar/piano, which this is. And did I say that it was recorded live, which I usually do not care for because I don't like to hear the crowd. Except for introduction. the crowd doesn't get in the way of enjoying the music. Highly Recommended.

It is an absolute good live recording. If you hear the electric guitar you feel a strong rhythm. The collections of songs are the second part of the first live recording. I will compare it to the live CD from the Noe Valley Ministry. The first live recording is a double CD. The speaking interludes are a lot longer than it is on this CD. The first one is played on an acoustic guitar. The song sounds different when you hear the two CDs. It contains the songs from Strange Angels till Learn to Sing like a Star. The songs that are in common are Pearl, You Cage, Cuckoo, Teeth and Your Ghost. All are classics. It is a little bit funny to hear the songs from Sing Like a Star in an acoustic form and not with the string arrangements.
