It is only when you buy this book and flip through it that you discover it was written by a schoolboy. I personally do not want to read a book written by a schoolboy because wisdom only comes through age, but I would not have provided the following damning review were it not for several additional factors. Although the author was between the ages of 14 and 18 when the book was written there was a delay of around 17 years before the book was published. Consequently there are no sightings considered after 1990, and the book is therefore out of date. More seriously, the author does not appear to have taken the opportunity to correct his juvenile writing style prior to submission for publication. In the synopsis taken from the rear cover of the book it is claimed that "What is surely unique about this book is the depth and breadth of the investigation - and discussion - of the evidence". Nothing could be further from the truth. The book consists of a large number of accounts of big cat sightings, but there is very little rigorous assessment, and what assessment there is is carried out is often naive and juvenile. As an example, UFOs and werewolves are seriously considered! No proper scientific analysis of the data is carried out, and the Conclusions chapter is less than a page in length. Many of the sentences in the book do not make sense, either because of the poor writing style or the huge number of typographical errors. In the regional account of sightings there is a section entitled "The Derbyshire Puma and Friends". However, the section refers to sightings in northeast England, and no mention is made of Derbyshire. Despite the book title the author only considers sightings in England and Wales, and the absence of an index is a serious omission.Read more ›

Just finished reading this excellent book and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Made all the more relevant by virtue of recent big cat sightings in the UK and of course the "on the loose" leopard prowling the streets of Meerut, near Delhi, India.

Highly recommended to aficionados of big cats "loose in Britain".

BIG CAT SIGHTINGS IN BRITAIN COUNTRYSIDE 12 July 2007

I ordered this book about two weeks & received it today. I haven't had enough time to read it thoughly. Only some pages here & there. I consider it a very well written book with fairly interesting information. Except the parts about a possible link between UFOs & mystery British big cats which parts I consider totally LUDICROUS. Also,in the past I have purchased & read other big cats books which I consider were way better written. To name two such books, MYSTERY CATS OF THE WORLD by Karl Shuker & MY HIGHLAND KELLAS CATS by Di Francis. Both of these books are more than just interesting . They are quite fascinating & well worth buying at any price. Not to put down this book in any way. It's fairly enjoyable & informative reading.
