Review

In some ways this book stands comparison with Tarka the Otter. The tone of voice and the pace are different, but the observation and the empathy are of similar quality. (Geoffrey Moorhouse )

Product Description

The author is happily ensconced within the safe haven of Moon Cottage with her husband, his son and their three cats Fannie, Titus and Pushkin. But things happen to enable a dream to come true for Marilyn and her husband, Michael. A move to the country is on the horizon. However, the stuff that dreams are made of does not always suit the cats in one’s life because, as all cat-lovers will recognise, cats hate change.
As in the earlier books the author combines humour, a little sadness and her own particular brand of enthusiasm while studying the issues raised by cohabiting with felines. In this book too she tackles the problem of realising a dream only to find that the dream is not necessarily the perfection it was imagined to be.
The subjects discussed include feline bereavement, reproduction, jealousy, passion, love, laughter, tenderness, wildlife in general, village life in Cumbria in particular and above all why cats matter.

Cat/animal lovers and all people who enjoy 'a good read' of any sort, will love this book. Written in Marilyn Edwards' inimitable style as shown in her previous two books, she gently shares in her observations, not only the varied activities of the beloved cat trio, Fannie, Titus and Pushkin, but richly combines them with the highs and lows of human life in general. Her husband Michael, other family members, plus friends old and new, all feature in its pages. Moments of humour, interesting snippets of general information about people and the world of nature, together with movingly described times of worry and sadness, round out and permeate the story of the planned sale of Moon Cottage and the subsequent move north to the Old Coach House at Hutton Roof in Cumbria. Peter Warner's beautiful pencil sketches put the icing on the cake to make this book a gentle joy for all who truly appreciate a lovingly crafted real-life story by this popular author.

Cat Lover's Paradise 20 July 2009
By Lincs Reader TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
This is the third of Marilyn Edwards' books in her series which starts with The Cats of Moon Cottage. Marilyn makes such wonderful observations of her cat's lives - she examines their every move, worries about them constantly and her and her husband's whole lives seem to revolve around them.

In this book, the family move from Moon Cottage to a cottage in Cumbria - Hutton Roof. Marilyn describes the move so vividly, how her three current cats - Fannie, Titus and Pushkin are affected by the long journey and their new surroundings and how they start to find their feet in their new home. A new home that allows them more freedom than Moon Cottage as, at last they are away from a busy main road.

Marilyn writes with a fabulous eye for detail - not just the new cottage, but the wildlife and countryside and their new neighbours are all vividly described.

These books are a real treasure, not just for cat-lovers, but anyone who loves animals and the countryside - alongside the beautiful illustrations by Peter Warner.

The Cats on Hutton Roof
Sensitively written about her own loved cats, Marilyn Edwards rather belabours some of the human interactions; perhaps more emphasis could have been placed on chronicling her life with her cats and less of the ongoing saga of moving home. It was more than halfway through the book before one discovered that Hutton Roof was the village where she and her husband had found their new home and about which few details were given such as why it was so-called. The end was somewhat of an anti-climax leaving one in the air and a little disappointed after reading her first book 'The Cats of Moon Cottage'in this small format series. The drawings by Peter Warner are again quite delightful; he has captured the nuances of cat behaviour with gentle observation, humour and understanding. The pity is that the constraints of the size did not allow for greater enlargement. The small format of the book, in hard cover printed on good paper, makes for easy handling and tucking into a bedside drawer. This was bought as a gift for a friend who has enjoyed it both as a story and for its drawings and attractive size.
I had chosen a second hand copy but was most happily surprised to receive in the mail, one in pristine condition.
