1.0 out of 5 stars Cheesy and not helpful 11 Dec 2007

I was recommended this book to help my daughter with Selective Mutism - but the book is barely readable, and so preditable, even my daughter couldn't stand it. I'm not sure we even made it through the whole book once. A total waste of money.

We did much better once we got away from the feel-goodery type of therapy and saw a doctor who addressed the issue with medication.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cat Got Your Tongue book 11 Sep 2010

I used this for a selectively mute child in grade 2. I read it with her and then the teacher read it with the class. The teacher liked using it and felt it increased understanding in the class of the girl's difficulties. I keep it in my library at school. I am a school psychologist so I am sure I will be using it again.

2.0 out of 5 stars This is not a review of the book just a comment 10 Feb 2012

I haven't read this book, but the summary to me suggest that selective mutism is a choice. It is not. It is an anxiety disorder. Trust me, my son wanted to speak in school, but froze up at every opportunity. My son did not begin speaking in school until the 4th grade and did not speak freely until 5th grade. With the help of medication, therapy, and age, he is doing very well. He is medication free now. He is now in the 7th grade and is the one teachers can't keep quiet. From my experience I don't think this book would have helped. Maybe it would for others.
