I think I lost interest on the section that said "Indoor or outdoor cat?". The advice, in brief, was that the dangers facing outdoor cats included coyotes, people who steal them to sell to laboratories, inevitable fighting and associated vet bills, dogs "many of whom are killers and their owners encourage them" and similar. The section ended "but it's up to your conscience if you want to let your cat out".

Apparently the safest room in your house is the bathroom as long as you lock all the medicines away (because cats are obviously notoriously good at opening blister packs and childproof locks) and shut the toilet lid in case of drowning.

Oh come on. Get a grip. If you were as scared of all the terrible things that can happen to your cat as this book suggests you should be, you would be a quaking wreck and so, probably, would your cat. I'd recommend something a bit more balanced and less scaremongering. Cats are independent creatures with a lot more wits about them than this book gives them credit for.

"Cats for Dummies" is an honest, light-hearted, and informative guidebook.

Though authors Gina Spadafori and Paul D. Pion, DVM, focus on "the fun and easy way to find the kitten or cat who's right for you," they cover a variety of basic and enlightening feline information.

The chapters range from "Choosing Your Feline Companion" and "Feeding Your Cat" to "Solving Behavior Problems" and "Ten Common Household Dangers to Your Cat."

Two particularly eye-opening chapters are "Ten Cat Myths--Debunked" (e.g., All Callicos are Females) and "Understanding Your Cat" (cats, it turns out, aren't color blind).

Many of the illustrations and b&w photos could have been clearer. Otherwise, this primer and reference work is highly-recommended.

If you own a cat, and aren't really sure of what to do with it.
I would suggest this book. This book dumbs it down so that even a child could own their own cat [to an extent, things like taking it to the vets, buying food will HAVE to be done by a parent for obvious reasons].

The book guides you through when you get a new cat and what you should do for it, and what to do with it when you've had it for a while.

Not as definitive as a longer book, however it gives you the necessities that you'll need to own an adorable cat! :)
