Product Description

It's a battle for global supremacy waged not between nations or religions, but... cats and dogs! Unknown to humans a war between the two has been fought for decades but there is currently a very fragile truce in place. However, when wacky Professor Brody (Jeff Goldblum) makes a discovery that could tip the age-old battle between the rival domestic pet species, Lou (voiced by Tobey Maguire), a feisty young beagle puppy, must act to prevent the felines lead by Mr Tinkles (Sean Hayes), a white persian cat, from achieving world domination.

From Amazon.co.uk

How can you hate a movie that features ninja Siamese cats wreaking havoc with their kung fu prowess? Cats & Dogs is an effects-laden family film that mystifies cat fanciers by casting dogs as the undisputed heroes in all-out warfare with nefarious felines. Hidden headquarters and high-tech gadgets are featured on both sides of this age-old battle. On the feline side, the long-haired Persian Mr. Tinkles (voice of Sean Hayes) plots to sabotage the efforts of Professor Brody (Jeff Goldblum) to discover a cure for human allergies to dogs. On the canine side, stalwart shepherd Butch (voice of Alec Baldwin) trains the mistakenly recruited beagle puppy Lou (voice of Tobey Maguire) to foil Mr. Tinkles's scheme--a mission that begins when Mrs. Brody (Elizabeth Perkins) adopts Lou for her son Scott (Alexander Pollock).

Using combinations of live animals, animatronic puppets and digital wizardry, Cats & Dogs has just enough imagination to match its effects, climaxing with a feline global-domination scheme involving mice sprayed with chemicals that will make all humans allergic to dogs. Goldblum and Perkins gamely play second fiddles to this menagerie of mayhem and, as madcap "realism" gives way to cartoonish fantasy, the movie escalates into utter chaos, burdened by lame jokes but highlighted by a furry supporting cast including a Saluki hound (voice of Susan Sarandon), a shaggy sheepdog (voice of Michael Clarke Duncan), and a Chinese hairless techno-geek named Peek (voice of Joe Pantoliano). Though never as charming as the Babe movies, Cats & Dogs is harmless fun--especially for dog lovers. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

I loved this film!
I watched it with my cousin who's 13. We put it on over Christmas at 7am, and though we were sleepy, we couldn't stop watching it!
The characters endear to your heart, especially the main character, voiced by Tobey Maguire, is a cute little beagle puppy, seperated from his family by accident, and ensuingly becomes a 'secret agent'! What follows are some hilarious moments, some touching moments, and a LOT of laughter!
The best part of all are the voices though, which perfectly fitted the characters...for example Tobey Maguire has a beautiful soft voice that suits his character.
This film is brilliant, buy it today, you won't be disappointed!

From the first scene to the brilliant tear jerking ending, this film kept you on the edge of your seat with action and had you gasping for air with its hilarious comedic scenes, while also making an impression on you with its touching moral, friendship. How I long to have a pet as cool as his dog (Lou), I even tried talking to mine but alas nothing. Overall a brilliant film for the whole family, a must buy for movie lovers!!

I first saw 'cats and dogs' at the movies and thought it was the most funniest film that i had seen for a long time, I decided then that as soon as it was available on video I was going to rush out and buy it! If you watch this film you will not be dissapointed, it has everything for you dog lovers as well as those cat fans out there. I did not think that it was childish at all, some of the humour is very funny and will have you kept in stitches from the moment it starts till the moment it ends......a definate must for animal fans!

This is a great movie with lots of laughs and is great for all the family. The DVD shows you how its made in one of its many special features. One of the most amazing scenes is the fight with the ninjas, the DVD compares this to the story boards originly drawn for the movie. Also, there is a very funny feature involving Mr. Tinkles previous audition tapes including 'Furriest Gump' and 'Catsablanca'. This is already a good movie but the DVD will take your breath away.

Don't even think about buying this DVD for the story, or indeed the acting. Both are middling, although the concept (that the world is a kind of Truman Show for the benefit of the warring feline and canine tendencies) is fun.
No, buy it like you would buy a James Bond film: for a stunning opening sequence that could be a short film in itself, for pacy action and great stunts, and for that slightly tongue-in-cheek way of telling a story that you're not really expected to believe, but that will be told properly.
The jokes are not always winners, and there are some lulls, but parts of this will give most children and over-30s a serious fit of the giggles - and in the 'family movie' category that's enough to put this head and shoulders above most of the genre.
Not a classic perhaps, but it will come off your shelf often enough to justify the purchase.

This is a very enjoyable film, which occasionally parodies other films very successfully. The leader of the cats, for example, is a white persian cat, similar to the one the evil Blofeld character had in the James Bond films, only this time it's the cat who's evil rather than the human. There's also a Russian Blue cat who coughs up all sorts of 007 type gadgetry from his stomach to confound the dogs. The first bit of the film involving a cat & dog chase was to my mind the funniest bit in the film, but the whole thing is well made and extremely enjoyable. The animal characters are well drawn, from Lou the puppy (a.k.a. Total Anhiliation!) to the evil Mr Tinkles. Adults and children will both enjoy it and I would thoroughly reccommend it.

I'm not sure what that silly cow who gave this a one star was on about, but buy it if you want the first cats and dogs film and you want to blu-ray, I think that is fairly straight forward myself...

Just wanted to say this is a thoroughly fun and enjoyable movie from 2001. I rate it 5/5 just because it is a fun movie and still a good watch. I saw this first soon after it came out on VHS in 2001 and recently seen it again and still really like it. Recommended for both kids and adults to escape into a fun world of adventure and cats and dogs. Not to be taken seriously and at 84 minutes long (DVD) it is not overlong or overshort.
