5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful, beautiful book, 25 Oct 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Catkin (Paperback)
I was a bookseller when this book first came out in hardcover and against all advice kept a pile in a display. I ended up selling many copies simply by pressing it into the hands of people who asked me for a recommendation and saying "Look at this"!

The illustrations are simply stunning - richly detailed and sumptuously coloured. The story is the kind of fable that can enrapture children and adults.

This is an unsung gem of a book that deserves to be on many bookshelves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!, 13 Dec 2000
This review is from: Catkin (Paperback)
As a young child, this was one of my favourite books. It is a book many children adore, mainly because of the breathtaking illustrations. The drawings have a magical feel to them, and they draw you right into the story. For a young children's book, it has a strong storyline, and children admire the kitten's incredible courage as he risks death to right his wrong, and the final truth at the end of the book is breathtaking, for children and adults alike. A thoroughly enjoyable book children will never want to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars a classic fairytale, rich and strange, 12 Jan 2006
By A. Craig "Amanda Craig" (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Catkin (Paperback)
Catkin combines the talents of two of the finest wirters and illustrators in picture books. The story is about a little girl, born to an ageing couple at the foot of a green hill haunted by the Little People. The child is given a tiny kitten, Catkin, as companion and guard; and when Carrie is stolen away and a changeling left in her place, it is Catkin who must go down into the hill and rescue his beloved companion from the deathless but childless fairy king and queen, which he can do only by giving them his name and freedom. The unearthly beauty of the story is matched by PJ Lynch's gorgeous paintings, which are both realistic and magical. We re-read this over a hundred times when my children were 3-6, despite none of us being allthat mad about cats.
