This book filled in a lot of the gaps in Catholicism for me. IT is what it says: a guide for dummies. I had read Path to Rome by Dwight Longenecker, a book by Ronald Rolheiser, a biography of Pope John Paul and Greg Watts' Catholic Lives, all excellent books. Catholicism for Dummies gave me a framework of Church history and an explanation of Church teaching. It was easy to read. I'd thoroughly recommend it.

As a recent convert to Christianity in general and to the Catholic church in particular, I was a little bewildered by some of the ritual and doctrines of the Catholic church. I found this book tremendously helpful in explaining the organisation, the teachings, and the rituals of the church. Some things that at first seemed quaint and even antiquated suddenly made a lot more sense when i learned of the history and tradition that surrounds the Catholic faith, and i felt myself coming to a greater understanding of the church and how through it, i can bring myself closer to Christ. It has answered many questions and put others into my mind which I have been able to discuss with my Priest and with others in the church. I would recommend this book to anyone in my position. It is written in an accessable way, you can read it from cover to cover or just dip into sections that are of most interest.
I also leant the book to my father-in-law who has been a Catholic for some years. He found it very interesting too, and I ended up having to buy him a copy in order to get mine back!
For those who want to enter the Catholic church, and for those who simply want to learn more about it, this book is for you.

Sums up everything you need to know without being patronising in anyway. If you wonder what a Rosary is, it is explained. If you want to know exactly how to pray with one, it is explained. Historical details are given, as are details of shrines, pilgrimages, etc.

A typically useful book from this superb series.

This is essentially an introduction to Catholicism for people who aren't Catholic. It covers all the main points of belief and gives a certain flavour of what being a Catholic in the 21st century is all about. Above all, it captures the humour of the Catholic world. The cartoons are worth the price of the book alone. If you have ever wondered what it is like being a Catholic, then this book is a great starting-point.

I got this book several months ago from Amazon. As a 40-something stuffy Brit I found its style a bit difficult at first. But as time has gone on I have found it a wonderfully useful source of information on Catholicism (I am now receiving instruction). It covers not just the faith "what we believe" kind of issues - there are many books that cover this. What is great is that it covers so many of the practicalities, what we do, how we do it, why we do it. It even explains simply how the date of Easter is worked out (to give a small example), or gives one of the better explanations of praying the Rosary (to give another). A very engaging and accessible book that I am very glad I bought. Good for both those committed who need things explained or for non-Catholics who want to know or understand a bit more. Sure it is a Catholic book, it is not there to criticise the religion - that really is not the point of the book, it is there to explain something to which the authors are committed.

This book is so helpful!! I'm a non catholic teacher, teaching in a catholic primary school and have very little knowledge about catholicism!! This book explains the basic things that I need in order to teach religious education and has been a God send!!! One of my colleagues who is catholic thought the book was great and is going to buy one too!! I would definately recommend this book, especially if you know absolutely nothing about catholicism, like me!! :-)

I have recently been accepted into the catholic church and we used this book in our catechism classes. It is comprehensive, covers all aspects of catholicism, and proved to be an excellent guide and source of reference for me and my fellow classmates. So if you are a beginner or are interested in the faith, or are wanting to update and renew your faith, then this book is for you. It will prove to be your invaluable guide and reference.

This is an informativem easy to read book about Catholicism. The lay out is very easy on the idea. Its section on the sacraments was particularly good. Two other excellent books about Catholicism are Catholic Lives by Greg Watts and From Gangland to Promised Land.
