Synopsis
Based on the novel by Catherine Cookson, The Wingless Bird stars Claire Skinner as Agnes Conway, a working-class shop assistant who dreams of moulding herself into an aristocrat. The ambitious Agnes befriends the upper-crust Farrier family, but at the same time finds herself mixed up with the notorious Felton family when she comes to the aid of her sister, whose affair with the roguish Robbie Felton threatens to ruin them both.

Catherine Cookson - The Wingless Bird [DVD] [1996]
I think that this is one of Catherine Cookson's best stories. This particular production is quite rich in the direct affect of WWI on folks at the homefront.
Claire Skinner is perfect as Catherine Conway - the intelligent & strongly independent young woman who manages to be the catylist in crossing class lines to join together 3 different social classes within her family.
Cookson doesn't shy away from gritty realism & she can certainly relate the most romantic story with aplomb.
This is a must-have dvd for any Catherine Cookson fan.

I love Catherine Cookson films and this is one of my favourites. I love the sweet shop she works in and it is very romantic, but is quite violent too. I think it gives viewers a first hand replica of what life would have been like for young ladies in those times and the hard experiences they had with their parents. It tells the tale of Agnes, a girl who falls in love with a sweet shop customer and who eventually marries but with devastating events to follow. It is highly predictable how it ends, as we guessed it straight away, but is a great film with good actors in.

Having recently purchased the Catherine Cookson Collection boxed set comprising 23 full length feature titles, I am about half-way through watching the set. As often as my wife asks. "Which is your favourite?" after every viewing, to this date I have been hard pressed to choose just one I so love them all. Having just watched "The Wingless Bird", I think I can now answer her question with reassurance that it'll take some knocking to remove from that perch. I won't spoil your journey of discovery by discussing the plot or characters, as that's rather like slicing the centre from someone's ice cold piece of watermelon on a hot summer's day.
Suffice to say, yet again splendid casting and acting by all concerned, with period production values which simply highlight the travesty it is that these beautiful drama pieces were only recorded for TV on video in 1:33 & 1:66, and not shot in widescreen 70mm or at least 35mm with an anamorphic lens as they truly deserve. Regardless, despite the non-anamorphic letterbox presentation on a Full HD widescreen, the productions are unsurpassed and a credit to ITV given the only too well imagined restrictive budget. Festival too has done an admirable job in presenting each title on a DVD9 disc.

Definitely my favourite ITV Cookson production so far of the dozen watched, and that's approbation indeed. In two words. Don't hesitate. If you like Cookson, I should be surprised indeed if you don't like this tale.
