Synopsis

In The Round Tower an unlikely romance blossoms when Angus Cotton, the son of a housekeeper, is wrongly accused of impregnating Vanessa Ratcliffe, the fiery 17 year-old daughter of a wealthy, socially-prominent couple. The film--which stars Emilia Fox and Ben Miles--is based on the Catherine Cookson novel of the same name.

Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), English ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Set in mid-1950's England, this story tells of the wealthy, socially upwardly-progressive Ratcliffe family. Their youngest daughter, seventeen year old Vanessa, feels alienated from her selfish parents, who are more interested in their eldest daughter's upcoming marriage into one of their town's old families. An old friend of the family, who is himself trapped in a loveless marriage, makes love to Vanessa one night, and she becomes pregnant, but won't reveal who the father is. Her parents are sure it is an employee of the Ratcliffe's, Angus Cotton, who hotly denies this and quits his job to go and start his own business. Vanessa ends up leaving home, and when Angus hears of the poor conditions she's living in in a Newcastle skid-row neighbourhood, he offers to marry her and she excepts. ...The Round Tower (UK) ( Catherine Cookson's The Round Tower )

Wonderful Story 28 Jun 2009

Catherine Cookson - The Round Tower [DVD] [1998]
This is a wonderful story, one of the best Catherine Cookson has written. The cast is stellar & it will certainly be watched over & over again. The period costuming & the social restrictions in those days are quite accurate. Any Catherine Cookson fan will certainly wish to have this DVD.

Excellent drama 4 Jan 2010
Format:DVD
A good story, good actors and good pace: slow enough to build and develop characters but not too slow. In short, a thoroughly enjoyable film (unless you are a hardcore action movie fan... but then you would probably not be reading this review).
