This story (trilogy) is of a somewhat different character to many of Catherine Cookson's other novels and so one expects a slightly different treatment. Unfortunately this series suffers from its age somewhat in that video and audio quality are noticeably less good than the later Tyne-Tees produced dramatisations. Using Derbyshire (I love Derbyshire) may have provided a useful backdrop for the series, but as a result it lacked a certain authenticity present in other productions. Actors accents are all over the place - but these do not detract too much from the story telling ability of this most accomplished author.
