From the Mallen secret. Barbara has gone missing, search parties are out day and night. Eventually, Daniel Bensham finds her where she used to rendezvous with Michael Radlet, she is at deaths door. Sarah, because of her entanglement with the plough has lost a leg. Her brother Jim, plans to go to Hexham to see a solicitor with a view to getting some compensation for his sister. The Radlets persuade him not to. The outcome, Michael marries Sarah. In the meantime, Barbara is convalescing after her near death experience. Unbeknown to all but Michael she has got her hearing back. Though Barbara is in bed she can hear every word that is spoken in the cottage. She overhears that Michael is married and attempts to commit suicide. Michael has now been lost to her so she decides, though not in love with him, to accept Daniel Bensham's proposal of marriage. They go and live in France. Harry Bensham, proposes to Miss Brigmore and they become spliced. On visiting Mary Peel at the cottage, they find her extremely ill and take her back to Highbanks Hall. Before she dies, her last wish is to see Barbara once more. Daniel and Barbara return from France. Barbara is at Mary's bedside when she dies. Mary is given a big send off. At the church Barbara and Michael come face to face and through sign language arrange to meet at the cottage. They fall head-over-heels in love with each other and the rendezvous continue. Barbara's father in-law is suspicious about these outings. He goes to the cottage and lies in wait. Barbara arrives and a short time after Michael turns up, they embrace passionately. Mr. Bensham being so overcome by what he has seen, has a stroke as he mounts his pony and trap yet manages to make it back to Highbanks.
Unable to speak, he is comatose and dies.

Had bought the 3 videos leading up to this from a car boot sale, so had to see the conclusion! It is like watching a play as opposed to tv, but the storyline is good, as are most of Catherine Cooksons!

An excellent drama.

This is a suberb sequel to the Mallen Girls - wonderfully acted as always.
I look forward to watching more Catherine Cookson DVD's.

This story (trilogy) is of a somewhat different character to many of Catherine Cookson's other novels and so one expects a slightly different treatment. Unfortunately this series suffers from its age somewhat in that video and audio quality are noticeably less good than the later Tyne-Tees produced dramatisations. Using Derbyshire (I love Derbyshire) may have provided a useful backdrop for the series, but as a result it lacked a certain authenticity present in other productions. Actors accents are all over the place - but these do not detract too much from the story telling ability of this most accomplished author.

Enjoyed reliving the Catherine Cookson books that I read when I was younger. The plot was good, but sorry to say the DVD seemed a bit dated.

Great, well acted and very realistic, but quite dark. I think it is better than other Catherine Cookson's TV adaptations.
