Book Description

14 April 2010
The King is dead; Long live the King Catherine Neville has no idea what these events will mean to her. Though of the nobility herself, she lives under the thumb of her cousin, the Duchess of Gloucester. Until Captain Kyle Fallon reminds her that she once led a very different life. She fears him as the man who shattered her secure world so many years ago, but is her memory of those events playing her false? Captain Fallon does not recognize her as the young girl who changed the course of his life. All he sees is a beautiful woman ensnared by the tyranny of the weak. All he wants is to show Catherine that she doesn't have to give in to her demanding cousin. He didn't count on being ensnared himself by her kind and caring nature. When the Duchess becomes Queen, Catherine is drawn into a web of political and personal intrigue. Can Fallon rescue Catherine in time? Or will she throw herself into danger by choosing duty and honor over love. Catherine and the Captain begins with the death of Edward IV and spans the reign of Richard III.

About the Author

I was born in New Jersey (practically lived on the beach), but moved to Florida when I was 13. Reading has always been my favorite activity, even as a child. I've been downsizing and have probably donated 5,000 books in the past several years. I still have seven book cases crammed full and I can't even count how many on my Kindle. My other passion is history, especially English History. I think my interest really began when I read "Catherine" by Anya Seton. When the inspiration came to write my first book, I naturally gravitated to the Wars of the Roses because of that book. My favorite author is Susan Howatch, my favorite book is "Outlander" and my favorite series is Harry Potter. I lead a Harry Potter book club at the elementary school. I'm still waiting for the rescue kitty lady to find me a kitty I can rescue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romance in the time of Richard III 14 Sep 2011
By Kew TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed reading this! It is set during a time in history that I find fascinating and the lives of the characters in this story are closely involved in the unfolding of historical events. The scene is set in the previous novel Ariana's Pride and we now follow the lives of Ariana's young relative Catherine and a certain dashing captain who plays an early role in that first novel.

As Catherine is a cousin to Queen Anne, wife of Richard III, the story closely follows the events surrounding his short reign. I found the setting very interesting and watching the gradual decline of Richard into madness. We also have a lovable heroine in Catherine and a strong but caring hero in Kyle (although I do find that name a little strange as I'm not aware of any Kyles in 15th century England!) That is a small point - if you are looking for an enjoyable historical romance, then I can recommend this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another page turner from Margaret Lake 30 Aug 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
For the sake of full disclosure, please let me begin by stating that Margaret Lake is my friend and that I was a beta reader for this book. Romance is not a genre that I usually read, but historical fiction is my favorite.

Catherine and the Captain is a very engaging piece of historical fiction covering the short, violent reign of Richard III during the War of the Roses. The Battle of Bosworth Field, as recounted (and footnoted) by Ms Lake, was the decisive battle that ended the war, the House of York, the Plantagenet dynasty and the Middle Ages in England. I may have skipped a few paragraphs about fabrics and colors but I still enjoyed the book enormously. This is a must read for any fans of romantic, historical fiction and a good read for anyone else that likes a well told story.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wanna-be historical 28 July 2011
By Leonine Pen - Published on Amazon.com

Although the author has the historical details of the main events down pat, the behaviour of the heroine seems off - either she's too docile or she suddenly displays streaks of "modern day heroinism". After a while, I just read the story for the sake of finishing it. The sub-plot of the heroine's maid and the hero's squire seems very artificial - these two characters just act too modern, bossing their respective employers around. Compared to them, the main romance seems tepid and boring.

Didn't like it much. Two stars only for the historical detail of Richard III and his family.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining epic 15 Oct 2010

I had read the first book by this author "Ariana's Pride" and since I enjoyed it, I picked up the 2nd one too.
The books can be read as standalone novels and a few of the characters from the 1st make appearances in this one.

I liked the heroine Catherine from the beginning. Even though she lets others run her life and take advantage of her, she never feels spineless. She has grace and a huge heart, which really shows in her friendship with her Maid. That friendship was precious to watch blossom. She never looked down on Gael based on her social standing. Gael and her Gavin both are such great secondary characters in this novel, they are more like part of an ensemble cast.
Let me not forget another character I loved, Father Finlay :).

The Hero Kyle is a great fit for Catherine. Both are very duty bound and so it creates some heartache and separation along the way. Wonderful romance between them that grows more as time goes on. He makes quite the dashing Hero :)

I don't want to give to much away so I'll just say this book has Kings, Queens, treason, love, Gypsies and a lot more. Its a longer book at over 10000 Kindle locations and it still went by fairly quickly.

Only one small issue for me was that I think I would have liked a epilogue of sorts. Maybe that is just me being greedy for not wanting to leave all the people I got to know so well :)

I am not very good at expressing myself in reviews but I really enjoyed this book with its historical details and great romances. If I could give half stars I think this would be a 4 1/2 stars for me.
