I wanted a book that provided information about the many historical places of interest I have visited in one guide and although this book only covers 60 Cathedrals and Abbeys / Priories and Minsters, it proved to be an excellent companion. Beautifully printed with maps of regions, it does not go into depths that can be sometimes difficult to read, yet provides the reader with detail and historical information that is enough to either support the information gained by a visit, or provide enough interest to make a visit worthwhile. Overall, not a bad introduction to religious monuments for the historical enthusiast like me. Recommended read.

There are several books written year after year on this theme but this is a good basic introduction to those places of worship that have stood high above the cities of our land each bearing witness to the Faith of the citizens over the centuries. The "unique" aspects of several cathedrals are also highlighted so that the visitor doe not miss them.

A good brief introduction to many cathedrals and abbeys in England. It is good to see places like Mount Grace included (although awkward to get to, the visitor is well rewarded). I was disappointed that not ALL Cathedrals were included - there are only 38 so it seems remiss of the author to not include Birmingham, Blackburn, Bradford, Leicester or Sheffield - ones which immediately stuck out as missing. A missed opportunity.
