More About the Author

Cath Kidston Ltd was founded in 1993 when designer Cath Kidston opened a tiny shop in London's Holland Park. She began by selling the vintage fabrics, wallpapers and brightly-painted junk furniture she remembered fondly from her childhood. Her clever, witty re-working of traditional English country house style meant that her shop soon became a cult success.

Gradually Cath began to design her own prints and products. One of the first was a printed ironing board cover - practical, quirky and with a distinctive floral print, it has come to epitomize the Cath Kidston look. The product base has expanded steadily to include an extensive range of homewares as well as women's fashion and accessories and the 2008 launch of the Cath Kids brand. Various products are manufactured under license by companies such as Churchill China and Fulton Umbrellas.

Over the years Cath's high-profile collaborations have included creating tents with Milletts (2005-6), Nokia mobile phones with Carphone Warehouse (2006) and collectible radios with Roberts (2005 onwards). In 2008 she collaborated with Tesco to produce printed eco shopping bags made from plastic bottles to raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Sales of the bags raised almost £500,000 for the charity and saved about six million plastic bottles from landfill. In 2009 Cath collaborated with Maclaren to produce a children's buggy in her classic spot red print. She has also published five books, most recently Sew! with Quadrille in October 2009 - a follow up to 2008's hugely successful Make!

Cath Kidston Limited has expanded steadily to become the unique global lifestyle brand it is today, with Cath remaining Creative Director. Currently there are 30 shops and concessions in the UK, two shops in the Republic of Ireland, seven in Japan and one in Kuwait. In October 2009 a shop opened at Heathrow Airport's revamped Terminal 4 - the company's first in an airport - and in November two new temporary 'pop-in' shops were opened in London to make the most of the busy Christmas trading period. The business' successful worldwide mail order, web and wholesale divisions also continue to grow.

Cath Kidston Ltd is one of the most influential and original design companies to emerge from the UK in recent years. It was announced in the Queen's 2009 New Year Honours List that Cath Kidston is to be awarded an MBE for services to business in 2010.

1.0 out of 5 stars So disappointed 5 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback
I bought this book without seeing it in a shop, and I expected it to be far nicer than it was. The patterns aren't very nice at all, and the photographed finished items look like they were put together by a child. My eleven year old is just learning to sew and some of the things she makes look better than these.

Don't believe a word of the label on the front that says 'Free Inside - Everything you need to sew 12 festive felt ornaments' as at least 11 of them require white felt, but white isn't included, you get cream instead. Hmmm... a cream coloured snowman?

The patterns included in this book can all be found online - either identical or very similar; and the felt included is quite poor quality. You can get the same thing in Hobbycraft or The Range for about 40p a sheet.

If you still want to buy this book then I'd recommend having a look at it in a shop before you buy - you'll probably change your mind.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not up to the usual Cath Kidston standard 5 Oct 2012
By Gleigh
Format:Paperback
Very disappointed with this book. Firstly it was a lot thinner and smaller than I expected. Secondly, not everything you need is included as stated in large letters on the front of the book - instead it tells you in very small letters what is not included. Thirdly the designs aren't anything special and don't look great on the made-up photos in the book, meaning my efforts as a mediocre crafter are going to look even worse! I have so much Cath Kidston stuff (including other books) and have always been impressed with the quality - Well not this time! I echo what someone else said, that had I seen this book in a shop, I wouldn't have bought it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing! 3 Oct 2012
By janno
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was quite disappointed with this book. The decorations are very simple and predictable, I was hoping for something a bit different that used her fabrics. Children or people with little sewing skills might like this book but an experienced sewer will find nothing original or innovative in this book. I am glad I bough it on Amazon and didn't pay the full price!

3.0 out of 5 stars Depends on your expectations..... 11 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have purchased two previous Cath Kidston craft books (Sew and Stitch). I have to say I really like them both. 'Make Your Own Christmas Decorations' was another matter. I will give you two opinions on it. Mine, which was that I was very disappointed with the designs in the book. There are twelve designs ranging from a Xmas tree, pudding, Santa and Angel to a little Stanley and a tiny cottage. There was very little special and certainly nothing that if you sat down and looked through other craft books wouldn't appear over and over again. The felt supplied was poor quality and oddly had no white included. Cream was there in it's place and was no substitute for snow or Santa's beard. Tiny pom poms, some embroidery thread and string to hang were included. Some Christmas ribbon wouldn't have gone amiss. I decided to send it back and left it on the dining room table to return. Then my eleven year old daughter spotted it and asked if she could have it. She ended up doing some of the little projects in it and was delighted with the results. She used trimming from my sewing box and actually improved the decorations offered with the addition of different felt, ribbon and buttons.

So from my point of view I found it disappointing and would give it two stars. I'm glad I didn't pay full price. My daughter, on the other hand, loved it and gave it five.

I think I would purchase it for a child who liked to sew little projects but experienced crafters may feel let down.
