Amazon.co.uk Review

The sixth chapter in the life of Britain’s most indefatigable all-girl pop group finds Heidi, Keisha and Amelle facing a new generation of female pop competition. The question: to take on modern soul songstresses like Duffy and Adele at their own game, or turn up the glitz and war it out from the dancefloor? Catfights and Spotlights hedges its bets, which is to say it does a bit of everything. Luckily, it does it mostly well: the opening “Girls”, a horn-led pop-soul number is mostly shallow and unconvincing, but “Sunday Rain” is a tear-stained, vintage-flavoured torch song with husky vocals and rolling piano, and a handful of songs penned by Britney/Robyn songwriter Klas Ahlund are smart and original. “You on a Good Day”, in particular, stands out, a stomping Northern Soul number dealing with the predicaments of a dundering partner: “That’s you on a good day/Disaster is always just a beat away/But I’m sticking with you anyway”. The album highlight, however, comes with “Side Chick”, fluttering R&B from the perspective of the girl that won’t be shared, fatalistic about the prospects of getting her man, but too in love not to try. --Louis Pattison

BBC Review

Almost a year to the day after the release of lemon sorbet-flavoured Change, the Sugababes release Spotlights And Catfights, despite, in May, stating that the album would be pushed back until 2009 to give them time to write the new material.

But luckily there's no sense of the album being rushed out. The Babes continue to work with producer of every self-respecting pop chick, Mr. Luke (Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears, Lady Sovereign, Katy Perry!), and lesser known (Robyn) producer Klas Ã...hlund. They've described it as being more mature; concentrating on their individual vocals, and indeed it bounds out like a Kate Moss Rimmel ad, all metallic, sharp-sure and savvy.

Opener and first single, Girls, is a reworking of Ernie K Doe's song of Boots' Summer 2008, and they happily stomp their attitudes all over it until you can't remember it being anyone else's. No Can Do is the super stonking bass-heavy follow-up single, playing to the Sugababes' trademark super-energised big goodbye songs, addressing boyfriends that don't quite come up to scratch. In contrast, You On A Good Day is a confusing Charlie's Angels-type shrugging acceptance of a man whose narcissistic personality disorder is hitting them in the wallet.

The track that most begs repeated listening is Side Chick: a light revved-up reminiscence of Rihanna's Umbrella with beautifully flowing harmonies tripping easily, nicely telling the boy to commit or be gone.

The low point of the album is the plodding Hanging on a Star, with Fergie style chanting and a hook almost completely ripped off from Offspring's Pretty Fly For A White Guy.

The trouble with the Sugababes' sound has always been keeping the balance between blending and preserving individuality, and they've managed it here on the whole. That is, apart from the bonus track, About You Now. It's a sad example of what can happen when you have three soloists outdoing each over a piano to mean it the most - the result sounds like girls at the back of the bus, sounding like the Sugababes, and screaming out for an auto-tune.

If only they had quit with Call A Truce, the most beautiful ballad with opening vocals from Amelle: it's a tired appeal for peace which finally secures her place and puts the ghost of Mutya to rest. --Lucy Davies

Wasn't sure about this album cause I didn't really like the 'girls' song which is track one, but thankfully the rest of the album makes up for it!
The music is catchy as usual from the sugababes, and I can't get 'hanging on a star' out of my head. Highly recommended.

Very, VERY good 24 Oct 2008
Format:Audio CD
I love the Sugababes. I believe Keisha is a very strong person for keeping the band so good after two line-up changes, Heidi seems adorable in interviews and I think her voice is the best one, while Amelle has done a deft job of both replacing Mutya while making her own mark in the band as well. These are three very interesting people who once again delivered a quality album.

I thought "Change" was dreadful and I was so happy to hear they had an electro-pop ban when making this album. So what IS here? Well, you have a clutch of lovable party-starters ("Girls", "You On A Good Day", "Hanging On A Star"), some gorgeous ballads ("Sunday Rain", "The Sound of Goodbye") plus some slightly experimental tracks ("Side Chick", "Beware").

Does this sound like the usual SugaTreatment? Well, I should mention one thing: the rawness. The vocals on this album are the Babes' finest so far. All of the voices have matured over the past six albums, and this is probably most noticable on the brilliant "Every Heart Broken".

But is it there best? I do have some problems with it. Being a huge Heidi fan, I was disappointed that she was given notably less to sing then the other girls, especially when she consistantly aced the few lines she WAS given. Also, one thing I love about the Sugababes is how they co-write so many of their own songs, but the writing situation here is worrying: Heidi has one credit, Amelle has two... Keisha has seven!

Overall, a very good album by a talented band. Buy it. But I await a more balanced CD next time.
