Product Description

Synopsis

A pot-pourri of animal anecdotes, based on hectic days at the author's Jersey zoo and his forays to various corners of the earth to rescue animal species in danger of extinction. First published in 1972.

From the Back Cover

A bloom of monkeys…

A big and rather beautiful tree grew a couple of hundred yards from the verandah just below us. There was a crash and rustle amongst the leaves. And then, suddenly, it seemed as though the whole tree had burst into bloom, a bloom of monkeys. They were Red and Black Colobus, and they were the most breathtaking sight.

"Another pot-pourri of animal anecdotes, based on hectic days on the author's Jersey zoo and his forays to various corners of the earth to rescue animal species in danger of extinction."

Gerald Durrell describes more amusing, informative and sometimes even tragic adventures with animals. The first part of the book covers the establishment of Jersey zoo (and therefore repeats a little of the earlier book 'Menagerie Manor') then moves on to an animal collecting expedition in Sierra Leone - a real gem in the Durrell corpus. The book then returns to the zoo and catches up with some of the animals from the first section. Finally, Durrell recounts his expedition to Mexico in search of Volcano rabbits. This book is, therefore, a bit of a mish-mash of stories but, as ever, it is a well-written and witty collection of delightful vignettes where the animals with their all-too-human characteristics are the stars of the show.

This is a great book for any animal lover. In the book, you will meet a range of different animals from rabbits of the top of volcanoes in Japan to White tailed pheasants in Europe. It is host to a great variety of births, including diasters..So if You want to read about Jersy zoo's struggle to get those animals of the endangered list, read catch me a Colubus.
I would rate this as a four star book.

This book is incredibily good. It is about Durrell's animal-finding expedition to Africa in search of the gorgeous Colobus monkeys. With tales of rampaging apes and interesting ways a mother animal can kill her young it can sometimes seem a bit far-fetched but Durrell makes you believe every bit of it. This is a brilliant book, if you like Bill Bryson I advise you to read this for more fun and animals.
