Maybe it's just because I've often harboured dreams of being a sailor, but there's an awful lot to love about 'Catch!'

One of the idiosyncracies I can't resist is the way Travis keeps to humungous shipfuls of serving sizes, so the recipes specify, for example, "6 Racks of Ribs for 15 hungry sailors" and "25-30 portions of Cornflake Crusted Creamy Mushroom Pork Chops". If this potentially makes the book seem a little less than useful for us landlubbers, the recipes are in fact so simple and easy to follow that even i can perform the simple divisions necessary to get the dishes down to family-size proportions.

There's no getting away from the fact that the meals prepared by Travis on board are aimed at convenience as much as flavour, at one point mentioning about a Shepherd's Pie that: "to make the presentaion a little fancier, use a piping bag for the instant taters on the top". But many of the recipes in the book are devised by Jason, Travis's chef brother, who is certainly on dry land when it comes to recipe-writing. There are some seriously delicious, inventive and feelgood dishes in this book, such as the Blackened Halibut Caesar, the Shipwreck Ceviche with Shrimp, the Firecrackin' Shrimp Brochette with Jalapenos and Pepper Jack, the Crab Club Sandwich with Vanilla Aioli and last but not least the Mango, Papaya and Brie Quesadilla. There's even an intriguing new recipe I've never come across before for pizza dough, which uses pale ale.

Much more than a novelty cookbook, Catch! is an exciting and entertaining cookery book with plenty to keep you occupied while you dream of getting out to sea. And, just remember, you've got more chance of keeping these delicious meals down if you avoid setting sail!

We liked this cook and tale book, because it was so GUY - guys out on their own - guys in danger - guys ALWAYS HUNGRY and guys cooking under some very rough and "make-do" conditions. In all that salt air, everything tastes waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too good, right?

The book is attractively styled in manly colors, ingredients set apart for easy cooking and every food section is preceded by some exciting manly sea tales.

Here's some of the at-sea, grueling conditions creations the guys ate between adventures:

All they use for this is crab and butter!

For this, they used olive oil, cut bratwurst, onion, garlic, bell pepper, jarred spaghetti sauce, Italian seasoning and spaghetti.

Pork butt, cumin, coriander, Anaheim peppers, flour tortillas, salsa verde, refried beans, Cheddar cheese and salsa

Butter, parsley, cilantro, garlic, lemon zest and juice, shrimp

Water, sugar, vinegar, bay leaves, onion and halibut

Aioli: eggs, vanilla, lemon and olive oil. Sandwiches: buns, olive oil, aioli, pancetta, lettuce, tomato and crabmeat
Paprika, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, dry mustard, cayenne, oregano and vegetable oil.

Canned salmon, cream cheese, lemon juice, onion, horseradish, liquid smoke, pecans and parsley (no cooking)

Sesame oil, sherry, soy sauce, honey, Sriracha, Chinese five-spice powder, garlic, ginger, scallions, sesame seeds and shrimp

Bacon, beef, onion, ketchup, brown sugar, sugar, vinegar, mustard, canned pork and beans, canned kidney beans and canned butter beans

Balsamic vinegar, fresh strawberries and vanilla ice cream

If you are a fan of reality televison's ' Deadliest Catch' and their brave crew.... and love seafood, this book is right up your alley. Deckhand Travis Lofland and his brother Chef Jason Lofland, gathered many of the crew' most requested/favorite recipes for the 'landlubbers' like us. Prepared in an easy format written clearly and illustrated with beautiful colored photos ( not only of the food, but of the various crews at work). Many of the portion sizes run from 4-10 people. When you get to the larger portions you have to do some calculating to fit the amount of people you will be serving. For those who still count on their fingers, there should be a portion reduction chart as a footnote. But that's just me. Not only is there sea bounty, but desserts and numerous dips & rubs for meat. Contents include: 'Lose the Beer-Belly Sandwiches',' Snag A First Date Appetizers' 'Tuck In Your Shirt, but Don't Bother With The Tie Entrees'. Written exceptionally well with anecdotes and heartfelt honesty, Lofland challenges you to think outside of the canned tuna/frozen fish stick mentality. Great recipes and a great read too! The recipes are creative and yet all ingredients are within reach of your cupboard. Everything looks so good I don't know where to start cooking! C'mon, Crab Club w/ Vanilla Aioli, Mango, Papaya, and Brie Quesadillas, Rosemary Pressed Ribeye....and its just keeps on getting better. From starters to desserts (may I recommend the Banana Lumpia w/ Creme Angliase?) this is one of the best cookbooks ever! Love Love Love it!

The recipes are so good and you don't need to be a gourmet chef to make them. There isn't a single one I don't like! The addition of Travis' tales, notes, and the pictures make it very unique. Even if you are not a fan of Deadliest Catch (shame on you if you aren't) you will enjoy everything about this cookbook.
