Product Description

Product Description
In Qwill’s opinion, 'A town without a bookstore is like a chicken with one leg,' and since the late Eddington Smith’s bookstore burned down, the town of Pickax has been somewhat off balance. To the rescue comes the Klingenschoen Foundation, manager of Qwill’s estate, which considers a new bookstore a worthy investment. Delighted by their good fortune, the people of Moose County prepare to celebrate the gala groundbreaking of the new store on the site of the old. But no one is prepared for the discovery of the body of a man shot execution-style in a wooded area on the very same day. Now Qwill and his clever cats have their work cut out for them... --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

About the Author
Lilian Jackson Braun composed her first poem at the age of two. She began writing her Cat Who... detective series when one of her own Siamese cats mysteriously fell to its death from her apartment block. Since then over twenty Cat Who... novels have been published, all featuring the very talented Koko and Yum Yum, Siamese cats with a bent for detection. She and her husband, Earl, live in the mountains of North Carolina. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Where's the plot?, 28 Feb 2004
By A Customer
Yes, there really is a man called James Mackintosh Qwilleran who lives with his two cats in a town called Pickax, 400 miles north of everywhere.....and that's where the plot for this latest addition to "The Cat Who..." series has disappeared to. I was looking forward to another in the "Cat who..." series, and tried to keep an open mind about the latest despite the bad reviews it's got from other readers, but I have to admit I was disappointed. The plot is much weaker than in previous books and the story seems to be a never-ending plug for "Long and Short Tales" and "The Private Life Of The Cat Who". Previous books have been more involved with more interaction between characters, more depth to the story and more of a plot. I hope I'm wrong, but the dedications at the beginning of the book read like the author is preparing to say good-bye, as she credits people with their involvement in the series. If it does turn out to be the beginning of the end, I can only hope they go out in one good book rather than a downward spiral of missing plots and not-much-happening, which this book may be the start of. I hope I'm wrong - I've grown rather fond of Koko and Yum Yum. One last thing - we all know about Koko's abilities, but even I'm not so sure he can be credited with bringing wild turkeys back to Moose County. Unlike a previous reviewer, I am looking forward to the next in the series - you try writing close on 30 books and keeping up the standard!!!!!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars The cat who shouldn't have been published, 26 Jan 2004

This book is badly written and poorly plotted. It is a sad disappointment after the earlier books, which are great fun. In this, the characters seem wooden and do not develop, and the plot barely moves. It reads as though some other person has taken Ms Braun's characters, incorporated some detail from already published books, recycled some plot devices (car crash, for instance), and churned out a pot boiler. I shall not be buying these in future (and I have a complete set to date). A rip off.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Bit of a Turkey, 18 Jan 2004
By A Customer
I have been a fan of Ms Braun for a long time and have all "The Cat Who...." books. I looked forward to The Cat Who Talked Turkey with great anticipation, as usual.

My first disappointment was on arrival of the book from the Postman. A little "light" in weight I thought for a hardback compared to others I had bought? We are treated to only 182 pages of large type face for this offering, which is a little light on plot as well! I am still trying to work out where Ms Braun was going to go with the Wild Turkeys.......?

To me it appeared as though this offering might still have been a working draft, which required to be fleshed out to add more chapters on the actual plot and round out the characters being introduced to give the book its usual character and an enjoyable storyline. I wonder ... is this to be the very last book of the series ..?

However, for fans of the series, there are some lovely paragraphs on the antics of Koko and of Yum Yum and her silver thimble. Some of the interaction between Qwill and his cats which I personally felt had been missing in later books in the series was back in this one, it's just a pity that the detection and storyline was not up to the usual standard.
