Though he had already established himself as a successful touring and recording artist in the mid-'70s, His Gonzoness became a certified superstar with 1977's CAT SCRATCH FEVER. Led by the smash title track and other testosterone-fueled anthems, the record went down as a shining moment in heavy metal history.
"Satisfaction", "Smoke on the Water", and "Cat Scratch Fever" are just three of this album's many gems. The title track features Bad Company's Boz Burrell on backingvocals and is centred on a guitar hook that stays in your mind long after the song is over. "Wang Dang Sweet Poontang" is a furious rocker that describes Ted's favourite activity (besides hunting). "Death by Misadventure" is a forgotten classic, with an speedy and undeniably stylish solo. Ted's guitar virtuosity is further demonstrated on "Home Bound", his homage to Jeff Beck's "Freeway Jam". "Live It Up", Ted's mantra for the '70s, features percussion by co-producer Tom Werman and has a Bo Diddley feel. A wildly intricate bass/drum combo propels "Workin' Hard, Playin' Hard". The two live bonus tracks from the Hammersmith Odeon in 1977 show why Ted isrivaled only by David Lee Roth for arena-stage raps.

What a clasic Cat Scratch Fever is, was and will be. So an album witht his as the title track should be great or is it?

Title track is 10/10 of course and then it looks good with some hard rocking Wand Dang Sweet Poontang. But then we start to lose our way and by the time we get to the instrumental Homebound or the AOR Workin' Hard Playin' Hard you start wondering... There is this American Rock thing where however hard rocking they are in comes the AOR and for a couple of tracks in the middle it looks like that. Sweet Sally rescues Nugent though and Fist Fightin' Son Of A Gun shows Nugent at his best again. Good end with Out of Control so it's a typical album of a 'good' artist. Great start, dodgy middle and then a good finish.

I simply find it hard to believe that this superb album was released thirty years ago,i still have the vinyl Lp which i purchased in Cardiff the same month it was released.

The title track Cat Scratch Fever is one of Teds heaviest melodies which is a surprise for anyone hearing him for the first time.

Wang Dang Sweet pootang is equally over the top but very skillfully played with his ultra fast Les Paul almost sounding like a machine gun.

To really appreciate Teds gift at the guitar you have to buy his live album Double Live Gonzo because some of the sounds he produces from his guitar are trully amazing.

For those interested in heavy folk blues guitar playing Teds albums are well worth a listen.
