This is a little gem of a book. It's packed to overflowing with facts and events involving cats. Fictional, historic it's all there. It's diverse, entertaining, informative. Puss won't approve of all the content (esp the cat dealers bits) but humans will, I'm sure learn something they didn't know.

Though this book can almost be considered a school textbook about cats and their place in society and the writer is after all a veterinarian, it contains funny and interesting parts, which make it a nice fast read. Some of the funny parts are the stories about cats mentioned in the book, like the fables with cats told centuries ago. Well researched and complete.

The book describes in depth the life of pet food sellers during the early part of the 1900's. It gives information about the meat they sell, the income they make and the character of these cat food sellers.

The book is very detailed and though cat and dog lovers would enjoy reading it. History buffs and people, who like trivia will love it too. Did you know there is a connection between cat meat sellers and Jack the Ripper?

The book discusses the nutritional value of the cat food and a funny part about famous cat owners. There is also information about why cats were important in Victorian England and Old Egypt. Some societies saw cats as evil and others saw them as divine.

The second part of the book is a sad, but funny story about a cat meat man and a few eventful days in his life.

All in all a very enjoyable book full of facts and fiction about cats.

Bring yourself to overlook the typos and enjoy some feline historical facts. I found this quite refreshing, something different. If you like cats and want to know some of these quirky snippets then give it a go. I particularly found the chapter on Victorian home remedies interesting, I didn't know canine and feline digestive systems were so different. There is no reason why they should be the same but nevertheless, it's amazing so many cats survived! It just reiterates how medicine in all specialities has come on and just as well!
There was a bonus story following the trivia, and what a twist the ending was - very sad and a bit unexpected although hinted at earlier on. A light, fun and enjoyable read.

I contacted Grace directly via Kindle Boards because I'd seen her post about a new cat-related title and my interest was immediately piqued. Grace very kindly provided a review copy of her title - full of historical feline related trivia - and I had a quick look at the first few pages. Of course, I immediately fell hook line and sinker into the book and kept breaking off to read things to Mr B.

One of the things that has always intrigued me about cats is how many contradictory views there are of them. They have been revered and reviled, adored and abhored, loved and loathed for as long as we have had any sort of relationship with them. It is for those reasons that I find any volume that considers our relationship with cats very intriguing and Grace Elliot's title is no exception.

Sharing the secrets of the Cat Meat Man (which may or may not be as disturbing to you as it sounds - I'll save that mystery!) and covering a range of topics, Elliot's title offers a wonderful glimpse into cats through history. Full of trivia, literary and cultural references, anecdotes and quotations, this is a title that will appeal to trivia lovers and those with any interest in our feline friends.

An excellent addition to any library and a wonderful celebration of our furry friends. Or enemies. Whatever your view of cats, I defy you not to be fascinated by this volume and the things you'll learn about them.

Indeed a feast of fascinating facts. Some of which I knew and a lot that I didn't. With a heartbreaking silver tabby tale at the end.
