I found this to be thorough and detailed about various problems. It is written with the cat owner in mind and not a vet, so it is easy to understand. It tells you in detail how to do mouth to mouth in an emergency, which other books don't. It also gives good advice on what do do if your cat drinks various poisons. The best cat medical book I have bought.

This is a must-have for any cat owner. While it does help to have a basic understanding of medical terms, the book offers an in-depth resource for ailments of all types as well as information on basic cat-care. Photos throughout the book aid in visual recognition of signs and symptoms of a multitude of illnesses.

The book was published in 1983 and there is a fear that some of the information and recommended treatment may be out of date or would not be recommended now adays, but still a great point of reference. I have had numerous occasions where a cat has had a certain ailment, the vet surgery is closed and you need some reassurance of what treatment is needed, so this book gives you an idea of how to treat the cat yourself or put you at ease. I recently collected 2 five week old kittens earlier than expected, as the mother cat had stopped feeding them - this book gave me invaluable advice on how to care and feed the kittens and their expected weight etc. The advice from the book worked and I had the kittens checked out by the vet and they have been given a clean bill of health. I could not have coped without the book.

Every cat owner should have this book. If you want to understand anything about the physiology of your animal, this is a great book - full explanations, proper diagrams etc. It is American and therefore contains some information that isn't relevant to UK owners, but this is the case with most veterinary books. A far better book than, for instance, the RSPCA Complete Cat Care Manual which only says for every ailment: take the cat to the vet rather than giving you any real information.

This book is fantastic and a must in any cat lovers house. The book goes into great detail about every ailment a cat could possibly have, and I can envisage some enthusiastic cat owners reading this and discovering the cause/reason why kitty is sick, is just a common complaint, instead of visiting their vet, (I should stress a visit to the vet is important for serious problems). I think this book will help me with alot of minor ailments, should any of my 4 cats develop a problem. I would have preferred less concise information and just a few more pictures as well to lighten it, but overall, a very necessary book for ALL cat owners.

I received the book as a gift 2 years ago. When a friend's Siamese developed anorexia-like symptoms, we pored over the commentary and decided our current vet wasn't treating her properly. We saw Dr. Liisa Carlson, whose treatment quickly cleared up the problem. We are grateful for the book's clarity and helpfulness

In the last 6 months we adopted 9 cats/kittens. Knowing little about these delightful creatures, we needed help! This book answers all your questions and more. When it's tougher than this you need a vet. I searched for another volume to boost my knowledge but couldn't find one better.

I agree with other comments, basically, if you own a cat, you need to own this book. This book is the best so far in regards to medical issues (the next step would be to purchase a proper veterinary book).

The book is written for everyday cat owner, it explains the desease/condition into more detial then other books, but best of all it is very visual, it contains the actual photos of many conditions, drawings and many diagrams.

The book is in black and white only, therefore if there was one thing I would like improved, it is that the next edition contains colour pictures, as on black and white photos, not all conditions are clear enough. Saying that, perhaps if they were, they would be too distressing to see.
