Product Description

A tender and beautifully illustrated debut children’s book from a New York Times bestselling team

A city savvy stray cat named Pretty Boy has always managed to make it on his own. He’s as vain as they come, and he won’t admit to being dependent on anyone. But as he discovers the pleasures of friendship, he learns that home really is where the heart is. Or, at the very least, home is where his friends are. And with friends all around New York City, Pretty Boy will always have a place to call home.

The author and illustrator team who brought us the New York Times bestseller The Christmas Tree introduce an unforgettable animal adventure in the tradition of A Cricket in Times Square and The One and Only Ivan. The result is a story that will captivate readers of all ages with its warmth and wit.

5.0 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC 5 Sep 2014
By M Barnett - Published on
From the moment I met the stray cat Pretty Boy and his unlikely new canine buddies Maggie, Roxie and Henry, I was hooked. I loved the unexpected relationships, the connections between young and old. A love letter to New York to be sure, but more universal than that, a love letter on what matters most in life, enduring friendships. Breezy, entertaining and sophisticated, Cat in the City is filled with characters that stick with you long after you have finished reading. An engaging, fast paced romp about how "one cat changes more than nine lives." I loved it and will be giving it to friends and family for years to come. A classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read! 10 Sep 2014
By debbie Abrams - Published on
As an educator, I am always looking for new books for young readers. While I was perusing new reads, I was so fortunate to come across, Cat in the City. I was first struck by its colorful and beautiful cover and then saw it was written by Julie Salamon This author was familiar to me because I had recently read, “Wendy and the Lost Boys,” the story of the playwright Wendy Wasserstein. I was intrigued that Salamon was now writing books for children. While reading the book, I was immediately enthralled with the characters and themes. Like many exceptional books for children, the book captures the adult reader as easily as it captures the young reader. Pretty Boy, a homeless cat, meets a varied and caring group of dogs as well as humans to help him navigate his way in a big city to a place of belonging. While building relationships with others, Pretty Boy learns the most about himself. A delightful book with colorful illustrations and many life lessons, Cat in the City is a must read for all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Based on a True Story 13 Sep 2014
By Cat and Cozy Mystery Book Lover - Published on
I just finished reading this book this afternoon and I just wanted to let everyone know that there really was a ""Real" solid white Pretty Boy the cat who would visit shops along the streets of New York. The real Pretty Boy appeared in 1998 and lived to be around 22 years old, when he died of natural causes in 2009. And he spent his life going from the pet store in the morning to a hair salon down the street
in the afternoon hanging out in customers laps and purring while they got their hair done. Then he would go back to the pet shop in the evening. He brought joy to a lot of people. This books shows the value of friendship. The illustrations in this story are wonderful and so charming, (and there are quite a few of them) and so is the paper the book is printed on. Very high quality. Would make an excellent gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book 7 Oct 2014
By Anita D Hollander - Published on
I love this book!!!! On so many levels it tells everyone's story. Families, loneliness, isolation, belonging, learning, accomplishing, New York City, ANY city, and what it's like in MAINE! This cat's story is not just for kids. It's for people of all kinds. In fact I think it's worth reading to your pets! I did! As a New Yorker, a mom, a musician, a person with a disability, a cat host who's learned everything from this cat who lives here, and someone who loves Maine as much as NYC, I just really loved reading this story and viewing the beautiful illustrations which really captured the sights, sounds, smells, and other sensations of the story. Do yourself a wonderful favor and get this book. I think you'll read it more than once!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a gem! 26 Sep 2014

A story comprehensible to children but a story for all ages. It is a New York City story. The cat is a personality, though not an actual person, and his experiences are shared by so many newcomers to the Big Apple (or any big city) – fear, confusion, dislocation, misery, and finding friendship, comfort and happiness in unexpected ways, finally feeling at home. All the characters are believable and interesting – real. Julie Salamon clearly knows her writing craft. With simple language, excellent plotting, and deep understanding of the life she portrays, the author puts us in touch with our human nature and condition in a way that leaves the reader feeling complete and happy to finish, holding this beautifully illustrated book and thinking “A gem!”
