Book Description

24 Nov 2011
Part 3 of the Touchstone Trilogy. Cassandra Devlin doesn’t know what she's for. But she knows she's running out of time. Since Cass was rescued from the abandoned world of Muina, the Aussie teen has proven more than useful to the people of Tare. Expeditions to their home world no longer end in slaughter. The teaching city of Kalasa has been unlocked. After years of searching for answers, they are starting to make progress. But space is tearing itself apart. Ionoth attack in ever-greater numbers. And "the useful stray" has been injured so many times that the Tarens hesitate to use her for fear of losing her. With one particular Taren now her most important person, Cass is determined to contribute everything she can, and hopes to find some answers of her own. What is the link between Muina and Earth? Why are the reclusive Nurans so interested in 'rescuing' her? And what role in the crisis do the inhuman Cruzatch play? Can Cass keep herself together long enough to find out?

5.0 out of 5 stars A great end to an exceptionally good YA series. 30 Nov 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the third and final book in Andrea K Höst's exceptionally good Touchstone series.

I don't want to give a plot summary, as being the third in the series it would be way to easy to give away things you should only know if you have read books 1 and 2, but what I will say is that this third book is my favourite of the three and brings the series to a very fitting and rewarding conclusion. The story is full of modern cultural references, internet memes, references to computer gaming, literature, as well as the occasional piece of Australian slang and it all works brilliantly.

The main character of Cassandra Devlin is wonderfully well created. The plot is stronger and in places a lot darker than in the first two books, and the continued development of Cassandra as an young adult in a strange and dangerous world is brilliantly handled. The world Cassandra finds herself in is beautifully created with a highly believable language, culture and history and an incredibly strong cast of supporting characters.

Overall: 5 stars - My favourite of the three Touchstone books and a really exceptional Young Adult science fiction/fantasy tale. The biggest compliment I can pay this series is to say that I really am going to miss reading about Cassandra's adventures and I will definitely be re-reading these three books again in the future. The whole series is very highly recommended indeed.

The trilogy of books are written as the journal of a 17 year old girl called Cassandra ("Cass but never Cassie") who, on her walk home from school, finds herself on a different planet and discovers that she has some rather unusual abilities, some of which make her a danger to herself but are essential to the saving of the lives of billions on three worlds.

The first two books in the trilogy were 'un-put-down-able' and this book is no different. It continues with its totally believable style of writing with mundane, excitement, pain, adventure, terror, love, hurt and all the other things that make up real life entwined together to make such a real story.

'Caszandra' brings the main story of the trilogy to a very satisfying conclusion which is then happily further built upon by the separate short story 'Gratuitous Epilogue' which draws everything to a delightful finish.

I like this series (see reviews of the first two) and this develops a new theme as Caszandra acquires a family and new relationships are explored. Could do with a bit more action, but its still a good read and finalises the series
