Featuring hours of action from a vintage era in motorsport, captured on film for the Castrol archives, this 4 disc DVD set is a true collector's item for rally fans. Eight classic rally films celebrating the sport's heydays, with exciting action and interviews with many of the greatest drivers of all time, including Roger Clarke, Ari Vatanen, Hannu Mikkola, and Stig Blomqvist. Flying Finns examines the techniques of Hannu Mikkola and Timo Makinen on the 1968 The Rally of the Thousand Lakes. Stages to Victory features the 1976 Castrol / Autosport Rally Championship fought over ten rounds with the issue undecided until the very end. Appointment in Penha see the giants of the world of international rallying, Alén, Waldegård and Andersson as they are featured in a titanic three-way battle in the mountainous 1977 Rallye de Portugal. A Tale of Two Rallies focuses on the 1979 San Remo and the 1979 Lombard RAC Rallies. Highlights include the efforts of the Lancia and Fiat teams to win their home event and, in contrast to the Italian sunshine, the challenges of Britain's forests in November. Chariots in the Sun covers the 1981 Acropolis Rally that took place over rough Greek tracks with dust and heat providing a constant strain on drivers and mechanics, dramatically captured in some revealing servicing sequences. Twilight Zone sees Hannu Mikkola compete in the 1982 Swedish Rally. The film includes dramatic in-car sequences of him hurling his Audi Quattro over snow-covered roads the Scandinavian twilight. A tense climax is reached when Mikkola and team mate Michele Mouton fail to arrive on schedule. The rugged Corsican scenery in A Place in the Sun provides the backdrop for the 1983 Tour de Corse and compares styles of the Audi and Nissan teams. Finally Local Heroes centres on the Thousand Lakes Rally in Finland with local heroes Hannu Mikkola, Markku Alen and Ari Vatanen fighting to the finish.

Classics in every way 23 Feb 2010
Castrol's annual rally films (film? remember that?) were always eagerly awaited by the rally fraternity. This box set turns the clock back in a wave of pure nostalgia, not just for the days when car manufacturers really could 'win on Sunday, sell on Monday'.

This is a chance to see so many rally legends at the peak of their powers - sadly so many of them are no longer with us - beautifully filmed by another legend...Barrie Hinchliffe.

The early films are, inevitably, dated but they do show the formative years of rallying at its highest level. Appointment at Penha shows how World Championship rallying was in the days when events lasted five days and rivers only slept twice and who can fail to be moved by the climax of The Twilight Zone and the conflicting emotions of Mikkola and Vatanen. Place in the Sun (which I was privileged to see at its first screening - at BAFTA no less) beautifully contrasts David and Goliath while Local Heroes evokes great memories of the 1000 Lakes Rally (its proper name) amid the emerging Group B era.

Sit back amid your faded copies of Autosport and try not to watch the whole set in one go as you toast the grand masters of rallying and rally film making. 'Dave' and NorthOne Sport...watch and learn!

This fantastic dvd set should be in any true rallying fan's collection. BHP were the team behind most of the rallying action that graced Saturday afternoons on Grandstand and World of Sport in the 70s and 80s before coverage of the British and World Championships was banished to the backwaters of satellite and Freeview channels. These films recapture the atmosphere and excitement of a sport that tested man and machine to the limit and beyond. Seeing true heroes such as the late great Tony Pond in action driving the door handles off his Nissan 240RS in Corsica as featured in A Place in the Sun, should remind us of how sanitised the sport has become in the times of ISC/North One, not a single PR person is in sight in this film!

Buy this set or miss out on a truly superb look back at the greatest form of motorsport in its golden years.

No two ways about it, this is simply a fantastic collection of half hour videos. Loved watching every minute of it. Every rallying fan old and young should own this to see how it used to be.
