Castrol's annual rally films (film? remember that?) were always eagerly awaited by the rally fraternity. This box set turns the clock back in a wave of pure nostalgia, not just for the days when car manufacturers really could 'win on Sunday, sell on Monday'.
This is a chance to see so many rally legends at the peak of their powers - sadly so many of them are no longer with us - beautifully filmed by another legend...Barrie Hinchliffe.
The early films are, inevitably, dated but they do show the formative years of rallying at its highest level. Appointment at Penha shows how World Championship rallying was in the days when events lasted five days and rivers only slept twice and who can fail to be moved by the climax of The Twilight Zone and the conflicting emotions of Mikkola and Vatanen. Place in the Sun (which I was privileged to see at its first screening - at BAFTA no less) beautifully contrasts David and Goliath while Local Heroes evokes great memories of the 1000 Lakes Rally (its proper name) amid the emerging Group B era.
Sit back amid your faded copies of Autosport and try not to watch the whole set in one go as you toast the grand masters of rallying and rally film making. 'Dave' and NorthOne Sport...watch and learn!
