Product Description

Product Description

CASTON & MAJORS is one of the most sought after Motown releases of all time and BBR is proud to announce the first ever CD release of the classic album with an entirely unreleased follow-up album included as bonus tracks! After relocating to L.A. the duo signed a recording deal to Motown. CASTON & MAJORS features the hugely successful track I ll Keep My Light In My Window. Co-written by Caston with Terri McFadden, the song would go to be recorded by the likes of Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, and The Temptations and would win A Grammy when recorded by the Mighty Clouds of Joy. Other notable tracks include the incredibly uplifting LET THERE BE LOVE and EVERYTHING IS ALRIGHT NOW which features a more recognizable Motown sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars MOTOWN'S BURIED TREASURE 25 Mar 2013
Format:Audio CD
The Caston & Majors album is my favourite album of all time. Motown had not released anything like it before and nothing like it since.

Leonard Caston is one of the unsung talents at Motown, where he relocated after being the director of the studio band at Chess Records (and one time member of soul group the Radiants). His flair for unusual rhythms and piano driven compositions shaped some of Motown's most memorable releases of the seventies, including The Supremes' Nathan Jones and a string of hit singles and albums for former Temptation Eddie Kendricks.

With the Caston & Majors album, Leonard , together with former gospel singer Carolyn Majors had a plan, as he described in interviews back in 1975. The album was to be a gospel-rock thing, leading to a staged production. "We're really searching for a spiritual concept and we chose music as the media because it was something we both loved and because it is the best way of communicating with a lot of people at one time," Leonard said.

Despite all the plans for the development of the project, Motown changed tack and chose not to release any singles in the US. The follow-up album was canned, and the project was not promoted. In the UK, three singles were released, the radio favourite (and almost-hit) Child Of Love, the jaunty Sing, and the albums' masterpiece, I'll Keep My Light In My Window. This latter inspirational song became something of a standard, with versions by the Mighty Clouds Of Joy, Shirley Caesar, Eruption, the New York Community Choir , Maria Muldaur, and, more recently Quantic with Alice Russell.

Motown stripped Caston & Majors vocals from I'll Keep My Light In My Window and replaced them with a duet by Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye.

5.0 out of 5 stars Caston - one of the Majors of Motown! 29 Mar 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Eric's Charge's first class review pretty much sums it up,but like Eric I was so knocked out when I saw it was going to finally come out on CD,I feel I just want to also express my delight at this album.
The name Leonard Caston first came to my attention when I heard "This Used To Be The Home Of Johnny Mae" off the Eddie Kendricks debut album in 1971,at the time he was only a co-writer but very shortly he was co producing Eddie's albums with Frank Wilson and they all had a fantastic, not to mention unique, quality about them that made them amongst my very favourites from the Motown stable(and I am one of the sad sorts who gets just about everything that is released with the M stamp).
So,when I saw he had an album out, teamed with Carolyn Majors,I couldn't wait to get it home to play. The opening track "Child Of Love" had me straight away, heavens this was going to be a great album I said to myself,I have to admit Carolyn's "There's Fear" brought me down to earth a little and it dawned on me that there was a certain pattern starting to form here(like the naive soul I am I didn't even twig from the cover...)and not being the biggest of religious sorts I was beginning to wonder if I was going to enjoy this quite like I'd hoped. After "Satisfied Mind(Sing)","I'll Leave A Light In My Window" and "No One Will Know" I realised the subject matter didn't matter one bit and I loved the album.

The "lost album" bonus tracks,as Eric says" are a seamless continuation and are a "bonus" in every sense of the word.Rather than being a religiously themed collection of songs(not that there's anything wrong with that),I see this as just another showcase of what a great, and very underestimated, talent Leonard Caston was.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything is Alright Now 28 Mar 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I bought the Caston & Majors Album when it first came out and have loved it ever since and for a long time it has been one of my top priorities to get on CD. Now it has finally come along and even better there are 9 bonus tracks and extensive notes on the artists who until now have been a bit of a mystery even to a fan like me. Its great to have this album now on CD instead of on very well worn vinyl, the bonus tracks don't have quite the impact that the original album had but probably only because I already new the original tracks. Although this is a Motown album this is in no way typical Motown although fitting it into any category is probably impossible. There is gospel, rock opera, pop, Broadway musical but it doesn't quite fit any one of those. Its quite unique and exciting and I enjoy it just as much as when I first heard it. I guess that this will mostly be bought by people who know the original vinyl album but if you'd like to take a risk on something different you might like to give it a go. But listen to it with an open mind, if you have any specific expectations you will probably be surprised, but hopefully pleasantly! Have a listen, I love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait for release on cd 6 April 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Had this on vinyl when it first came out in the 70s. Still sounds fresh and uplifting. Unreleased tracks easily as good as the previously released ones, but then Berry Gordy wasn't keen on any of it so no surprise it wasn't released after poor sales of first one.

The track "Keep a Light in my Window" was also done later by Diana and Marvin and is easily available on cd and worth getting. However, look out for the Temptations version that came out mid 80s; a great version of a beautiful song.
