As an Army Officer the study of military history is a professional necessity. The book: Castles their Construction and History has proven to be an incredible aid to this end. I am stationed in Europe and use the book as a guide when I travel and explore the castles in Germany, France and Italy. The book is very technical, it wastes some space giving detailed step by step descriptions of many castles but the casual reader of history will find the drawings, photos and overviews of history very interesting. The text of the book is rather dull to the non-history buff. It was very useful as a reference book while at the University of Florida.

I bought this book many years ago in the US because of my interest in general medieval knowledge and warfare, gained from years of Dungeons & Dragons playing and (of course) movie watching. I learned so many things from this book that would add to the general knowledge of European castles of anyone interested in the subject. I didn't find it boring or repetitive, instead it was fulfilling and packed with useful (possibly nerdy) information. Anyone wanting to get general info on a variety of 'classic' European castles should give this a read. For gamers and roleplayers the book has many floorplans so you can contrast what you see in-game with what an actual castle is really like.

I wanted to know more about the design and features of castles through the medieval period, and this book seemed to fit the bill. The good points: easy to ready, well written, takes a reader on a logical journey through castle development and design sources (e.g. from the Middle East) and how these ideas were incorporated into fortifications. Castles have evolved remarkably over time.
The only negative points about this book are: it throws in ideas such as brick course, timber strengthening and so on without actually explaining what they are and how they were constructed (and their specific benefits). Second niggle: a little light on actual full castle plans/schematics.

A very good book in all.
