3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting introduction to Scottish Castles 10 May 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
An interesting and extremely readable introduction to a range of Scottish Castles and Ancient Monuments, well-illustrated and ideal for dipping in and out of. Not quite the comprehensive treatise suggested, however, for which reference would have to be made to a range of other (more academic) publications such as MacGibbon and Ross' Castellated and Domestic Architecture of Scotland.

All in all, a good purchase for those just generally interested or planning a trip to Scotland.

I love this book. It is beautifully written and marvellously illustrated. It gives excellent coverage of the 200 best castles and historic sites in Scotland. My only complaint is that this is probably only 10% of the total number of castles in Scotland so less well known sites are overlooked. But a great introduction to Scottish Castles and a fine guide for tourists.

5.0 out of 5 stars A guide book not a history book 31 May 2006
Format:Paperback
The history may be inaccurate, as other reviewers have indicated, but I was looking for a guide to ancient and mediaeval sites to visit whilst in Scotland this summer. This book with its enticing illustrations gave me exactly what I wanted. The regional organisation is very helpful. I borrowed it from the library and found it so useful I decided to buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars No, it's not a pile of rocks 9 Aug 2011

A companion book to Noonan's excellent The "Daily Telegraph" Castles and Ancient Monuments of England: A County-by-county Guide to More Than 350 Historic Sites, this covers the area north of Hadrian's Wall as far as Britain's most northerly castle (Muness on the island of Unst). The introduction to this covers Scotland's earliest known archaeological finds through to Bonnie Prince Charlie and 1745 when the building of castles appeared to cease.

It contains more on Brochs, Duns and chambered tombs simply because there is an abundance of such things, particularly on the islands. Scottish castles aren't always what you would think them to be; many are actually houses that are still inhabited, which might cause some confusion with people thinking they're visiting a ruin. The backdrops to a lot of these tend to be on the edge of lakes (sorry, lochs), which only enhances their romanticism. Scotland has the best-preserved Neolithic house anywhere on Mainland, Orkney, as well as Maes Howe, possibly the finest ancient monument in Britain. At the other end of the scale is something like Dunadd, an iron age fortress/residence set on top a rock rising from a flat plain. I climbed up this when I was on holiday in Oban (it's in Argyll & Bute) just for the views. I had no idea what it was until I bought this book soon after and exclaimed, "Oh, that's where we went". See how useful it can be?

Once again, the text tells you what you want to know, as far as possible considering the space available of course, and any reference book that makes you think, "Hmm, I'd like to see that" is well worth the money.
