Product Description

Product Description

From inside a giant asteroid, hundreds of light years from Earth, Admiral Jenetta Carver is beginning to look forward to a trip home, and finally receiving command of her own ship. Her five-year tour of duty as the Base Commander of the Stewart SC Base is nearing an end, and the ship carrying her replacement has been underway for more than a year.

However, when the GSC destroyer carrying Admiral Vroman is attacked just a few light years from the base, her plans are quickly forgotten. Rescue ships arriving at the site the next day find only corpses aboard the Lisbon, while a severely damaged freighter with a dead Tsgardi crew floats nearby. There's no sign of the admiral, and most of the SC crew is missing.

The Milori Military Forces, unsuccessful in their first attempt to defeat the Galactic Alliance and annex its territory, are preparing for a second assault. Emperor Maxxiloth has decided he won't be embarrassed a second time and sends every ship available in his empire as part of the new invasion force.

Months later, a shuttle touches down on a primeval world far inside the Frontier Zone, where Admiral Vroman and the senior officers from the GSC destroyer Lisbon are to be marooned by their Milori captors. As the rest of the crew is being shuttled down to the surface, the officers quickly draw up a plan of survival. Left with only the most basic of supplies and equipment, the spaceship crew must learn how to exist in a hostile, planetary environment.

While the forces at Stewart are preparing for an imminent attack by the Milori, the crew of the Lisbon is learning that they have some rather large and particularly nasty neighbors with voracious appetites and predacious habits.

Great Read 7 July 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I read all 7 books within 2 weeks; I simply could not stop reading as I had to find out what happens next. I am a somewhat jaded military SF reader and I must admit that some of the solutions were ingenious. I felt that some events went too "smoothly", but I chose to ignore them and thoroughly enjoyed the read.

I am not going to tell you the content, but when reading the first books it reminded me of the Honor Harington series by David Weber.

The best so far 5 April 2011

5 Stars again, because the formula works so well. There is nothing overly sophisticated about the writing, but the stories are enthralling. Like many I have read the whole series to date and await the new book. I enjoyed this one most as the author introduced new sub plots, characters and species. Really good fun to read, this series could run and run. I await the next book, and will probably not put it down until finished.

Looking for new books for my Kindle, and being a Sci-Fi fan, I was convinced by the existing reviews to try the first of the series.

The author plainly states that it is a simple fun-fest - where the good-guys win and the baddies all lose, and indeed this is true.

However, I enjoyed the first book (with it's excellent characters) enough to get all of the series, and indeed to read them all a second time. Like many other reviewers, I'm quite happy to recommend this series, and am indeed looking forward to Book 7.

The only criticism I can think of is that the author tends to repeat (in detail) explanations for some the 'things' present in his Universe, like the CT unit for example. This is both not necessary and a bit tiresome, as many people would have read the descriptions many times before, and a simple description would be adequate.
(If necessary these could be added to a Glossary at the end for those reading one of the books for the first time, but out of sequence.).

However, the writing style is generally good, the characters are excellent, the atmosphere generated is good and they are well worth the price paid.

I've given it 4 stars (because of some of the repetitious descriptions), but it's probably worth a 4.5 star.
