4.0 out of 5 stars Good, Fun to read, Mystery 25 Oct 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Julie O'hara cannot believe that her close friend, artist, Marc Solomon commited suicide, even though the police think that the case is clear. She is determined to find out what really happened and begins her own investigation. Given her own past connections with the Solomon family, Julie's personal tragedy and her memories of Castle Cay are inevitably brought back into sharp focus. The final truth about what happened to Marc involves much more than Julie could possibly have imagined.
This is an easy-to-read and enjoyable mystery. It took a few chapters to get into it due to a silly niggle I had with 'Julie' who starts off as 'Julia' but her name is misheard and from then she becomes 'Julie.' - even, it seemed, to herself. It's strange but it took me a little while longer than it should to get to know the character because of that and I found it to be a detail I would have rather have been left out altogether! However, reading other reviews no one else has mentioned this so it's probably just me!
I very much liked the idea of Julie being a body language expert, i thought that was unusual and wished that aspect had been used in the story even more. I see from the title that this is the first in a series so maybe that will be developed more in subsequent books - I hope so! Good, well-written mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superbly-plotted murder mystery 12 May 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In Castle Cay, Lee Hanson has meticulously crafted a fascinating murder mystery that will delight fans of the genre. The book has a very strong opening - the premise of the story is immediately revealed as the protagonist Julie O'Hara and the reader set about uncovering the truth behind her best friend Marc Solomon's death.

Julie O'Hara is a complex, vibrant protagonist whose particular skill (she is a body language expert) is invaluable in helping her `read' her suspects. But it is when the reader learns about her tragic past that Julie really starts to jump off the page.

One of the book's main strengths is that even the supplementary characters feel fully fleshed out - they are dynamic and interesting - which makes it more than just a murder mystery as you are deeply involved with the various family members and friends (from the deceased's relatives to Mafia members).

The author's greatest success is in putting together such a complex plot while retaining the page-turning narrative that keeps the reader hooked. Sometimes when an author adds extra elements to a plot it can detract from the storytelling, but when Castle Cay sees the introduction of the upper echelons of law enforcement, this only serves to deepen the reader's interest in this addictive novel.

This book is well worth reading - I will certainly be looking out for all future Julie O'Hara stories.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but predictable 7 May 2014
By Perkins
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Julie started out her working life in car sales but is now an expert in body language and is sometimes used as an expert in jury selection. When her best friend is found dead, she is immediately suspicious of the suicide verdict and feels compelled to seek the truth. Whilst this was a relaxing read, the plot could have been a whole lot tighter if the author hadn't relied so heavily on such large chunks of flashback to fill in the background. Because all the back stories were revealed in flashback, the book was sadly lacking in suspense and there were absolutely no surprises for the reader. Nevertheless, all the relevant detail was well-researched and informative and the only thing that really grated for me was the use of the nickname 'Merlin' which was rather unnatural and didn't really work. However, the characters were likeable and well-drawn and on the whole, it was an enjoyable read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Gave up on it 8 May 2014
By MrsG
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The book sounded great from the reviews and description but despite trying persevere with it, I gave up on it. The story jumps from here to there, so many names and characters are introduced that I lost count and the plot. Unfortunately, I also did not find the main character, Julie O'Hara convincing or to my liking. I'm sorry but I would not recommend this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars A likeable heroine..but tedious writing 24 Mar 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story began with promise, but went rapidly downhill with the author's over-explanation of every detail. Too many gaps, little tension built in the opening scenes and a lack of chemistry between the lead male and female.
