Review

“This is the Arabian Nights with a twist. Readers won’t put down the book until they figure out all its secrets.”
SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL (starred review)

"A bewitching romp, gratifying to mind, imagination, and funnybone."
KIRKUS REVIEWS

Praise for Diana Wynne Jones

“…Her hallmarks include laugh-aloud humour, plenty of magic and imaginative array of alternate worlds. Yet, at the same time, a great seriousness is present in all of her novels, a sense of urgency that links Jones’s most outrageous plots to her readers’ hopes and fears…”
Publishers Weekly

“Diana Wynne Jones ought to be crowned with coloured garlands because she is the best writer of magical fantasy for children in this country ” Evening Standard

“Diana Wynne Jones could teach Stephen King and JK Rowling a thing or two … [she] has a skill for inserting just the right amount of detail in her written words, leaving you satiated but not stuffed.” SFX

Product Description

A magical Arabian Nights tale from the captivating creator of fantasy, Diana Wynne Jones. The dazzling sequel to Howls Moving Castle, now a major animated film.

Far to the south in the Land of Ingary, lives a young carpet merchant called Abdullah. In his dreams, he is the long-lost son of a great prince. This dream is a complete castle in the air… or is it?

Abdullah’s day-dreams suddenly start to come true when he meets the exquisite Flower-in-the-Night, daughter of the ferocious Sultan of Zanzib. Fate has destined them for each other, but a bad-tempered genie, a hideous djinn, and various villanous bandits have their own ideas. When Flower-in-the-Night is carried off, Abdullah is determined to rescue her – if he can find her.

'Castle in the Air' is Diana Wynne Jones' sequel to the marvelous 'Howl's Moving Castle'. Far from being just an update of the previous story, 'Castle in the Air' introduces us to brand new characters right from the start. The story takes us on an action-packed adventure with new protagonists Abdullah and Flower-in-the-Night, before meeting up with Howl and Sophie towards the latter part of their journey. A variety of twists and turns guide the plot, with plenty of sorcery and a few laughs thrown in for good measure. Highly entertaining as a story in its own right, and for fans of Howl, this will not disappoint.

The wonderful thing about Diana Wynne Jones' writing is that her characters are so perfectly formed. The heroes have good days and bad days, get grumpy, do the wrong thing just like real people do. This is a great follow up to Howl's Moving Castle, although, as with many of Jones' books, it is not a straight sequel and old characters are not the mainstay of the story. This book made me laugh from beginning to end and remains one of my favourites.

Tonnes of fun! 8 Feb 2001

Castle in the air is a great sequel to Howls moving castle. Howl, Sophie, Calcifer and the gang appear very subtley throughout the story, making you slap your head at the end when you realise who they are. As after the first book the characters seemingly settled down, it makes sense to introduce new characters. Abdullah is a bit wet, as is flower in the night, but the book is worth reading just to meet the two fat twins Abdullah is set to marry. Excellant read. One of DWJ's best.

not really a sequel and not nearly as good. but who cares?
Diana Wynne Jones doesn't really do sequels. That would be too straightforward. And, you know - deep down, it's not really what you want anyway. Read more
