Book Description

The first part of Plaidy's captivating Spanish Trilogy on Isabella and Ferdinand.

With fifteen-century Spain rent with intrigue and threatened by civil war, Isabella became the pawn of her ambitious, half-crazed mother and a virtual prisoner at the licentious court of her half-brother, Henry IV.

Was she, at sixteen, fated to be the victim of the Queen's revenge, the Archbishop's ambition and the lust of Don Pedro Giron, one of the most notorious lechers in Castile?

Numbed with grief and fear, Isabella yet remained steadfast in her determination to marry Ferdinand, the handsome young Prince of Aragon, her only true betrothed ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable beginning 3 Feb. 2010
Format:Paperback
This is the first Jean Plaidy book I have read and I really enjoyed it. A good mix of well-presented facts weaved with fiction, she really creates an atmosphere of suspicion, decandence and betrayal in this novel. I particularly enjoyed Plaidy's portrayal of the power hungry courtiers and their role in the developments in the formative years of Isabella. Isabella is depicted as a pious, determined and loyal young woman and I can't wait to read the following two books and continue her story.

4.0 out of 5 stars going back in time 7 May 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have not read any Jean Plaidy books for years but a trip to Spain made me interested in Isabella of Castile and I remembered Jean Plaidy's Isabella trilogy. It is an easy read and brings out the drama of the very dangerous and violent times. I have enjoyed it and will look for the other two books that follow this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars How a good little girl becomes a mighty monarch 24 July 2011
By Mariana
Format:Paperback
Highlights a versions of the events and feelings that portraits the personality of Isabella of Castile. From the influences and feelings of childhood what events carved her into a strong-willed and respected queen, but still a romantic woman.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Easy & Interesting Read 26 Sept. 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is the first Jean Plaidy book I've read and looking forward to reading more in the future.

A very easy book to read and with the historical background. Needed closer proof reading as there were some silly errors in it, but didn't detract from the story.

The scheming that went on behind the scenes by courtiers was fascinating and would certainly give modern day soap operas a run for their money.

Very good book. Would recommend if you are interested in history and all that goes on behind the scenes

4.0 out of 5 stars 1st in the spanish trilogy 12 Jun. 2009
Format:Paperback
this is the first in the spanish trilogy which about isabella and ferdinand who were the parents of katherine of aragon. this story focuses on isabella's early years and the way she became queen of castile. ferdinand features only very little and very much in the later stages of the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Isabella Queen of Castile 7 Feb. 2009
Format:Paperback
Too strange for fiction, the story of the early life of Isabella and her mad mother will grip the reader. How her determination to marry Ferdinand of Aragon wins through in the end, in spite of many false starts and obstacles.
