Product Description

Harry and Laura first met during the late autumn of 1942. Harry was a Staff Sergeant and one of the many Americans stationed in the United Kingdom during the Second World War. Laura was a young housewife and mother whose husband was serving in the British Army. Harry and Laura embarked on a lengthy and passionate adulterous affair which resulted in my illegitimate birth.

Following the war, Harry returned home to the United States and Laura was divorced by her husband on the grounds of her adultery. Laura later met and had an affair with another man and this relationship resulted in her giving birth to twins. She now had four children to three different fathers and life was a real struggle for her. Eventually, she met someone else - whom she married. However, this marriage was a total disaster and the relationship was one of considerable domestic violence. During most of my childhood, I had to witness my step father beat my mother regularly.

Throughout my life, my mother had refused to tell me anything about my actual father and she even denied the American connection. My older sister used to visit her own father and grandmother regularly but she also refused to tell me anything about my father. I didn`t know his name or anything about him.

I grew up in the slums of Salford. I experienced the prevailing social stigma of being the illegitimate son of an American soldier. It was made worse by the fact that my mother had cheated on her soldier husband during wartime. As the years went by, I grew up, got married and raised three children. A spiritualist medium told me the name of my father. This eventually led to me confronting my mother about him. Surprisingly, she now agreed to tell me everything I needed to know. For years she had wanted to tell me but didn`t know how to. Her story was sad yet compelling. After hearing it, I knew that I had to try and find him.

With my mother`s agreement, I undertook a three year search to find my father and was eventually successful. He was still alive and wished to see me. I visited the United States and met up with him. He had never married and he had no other children. During my visit with him, he telephoned my mother back in England and invited her to an all-expenses paid visit to see him. Laura had never been on an aeroplane before, she was seventy four years of age but without hesitation, she flew to America to see him. What happened next leaves me breathless even today.

An excellent book 21 Oct 2011
By Katie
Format:Kindle Edition
I really enjoyed reading "Cast No Stones". It details Kevin's childhood years in the slums of Salford and the stigma he unknowingly encountered for being the child of an American GI and the clues that led to him finally confronting his mother about his father. I was amazed at his determination to find his father in later years as he encountered one obstacle after another and the drama that unfolded. This is a very unusual story which has amazed me and I am very happy to have read it. I would highly recommend this book.

Cast no Stones 16 Oct 2011
By Anne H
Format:Kindle Edition
I found this an excellent read. I could not put it down once I had started.

From the start of the book I felt different emotions, sadness, some laughter, tears and anger.
This book really did make me think and analyse the situation.
Times were different and people's opinions and the way they treated others were different in the post war years.

In summing up, I felt that this was a three way story. Kevin's parents started it and they finished it and Kevin gave them that opportunity with his sheer determination and steadfastness to find out the truth about his father and at long last be able to slot everything into place for himself.

I would thoroughly recommend this book and would love to see a film made from this unbelievable story.

Author overview 25 Oct 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Dear Reader,

My thoughts and intentions whilst writing this book were to cause a little upset; to make the reader both laugh and cry; to pull no punches and to tell the story truly as it was - warts and all. I have been absolutely honest at all times. The need to bare my soul and vent my feelings became very obvious to me from the start.I have not shirked from the somewhat embarrassing need to highlight certain issues. I intended more than anything to to cause thought provocation and to acquaint the reader with a different perception of life styles and circumstances than they possibly experienced during these immediate post war years themselves. Of course, I am not unique in much of what I experienced. I am certain that many readers would easily be able to relate to the times and their own experiences.

Equally, If younger readers now have a better understanding of the Social Attitudes prevailing at the time and are able to compare yesterday`s attitudes with present day behaviour then they just might reflect on what has been a massive change in morals, standards and behaviour from what was the norm for many of we older members of society.

If I have kept the reader avidly enthralled from start to finish, I would have achieved my goal. Judging from the contents of your reviews, I am not only delighted with the response but I consider I have done a pretty good job.

Before we cast any stones in the future, let us hesitate for a moment and try to put things in true perspective. Often we are just innocent victims of circumstances that are beyond our control. We can only do the best we can.

Thank you for reading my story and reviewing it. best wishes Kevin Machell
