Book Description

5 July 2010
Cassius was an exceptional police dog. In just five years he scored a century of arrests, saved lives, bit half a dozen policemen, and gave his handler, PC Joe Sleightholm, the most exhilarating and nerve-wracking experiences of his life. Things did not go according to plan in Joe's first years as a police dog handler - he just couldn't find the right dog. Then Cass came along. The two of them quickly formed a bond, graduated as stars from their training, and became an outstanding, effective working partnership. Car thieves, armed robbers, drug dealers, burglars - Cassius learned how to track them down, contain them, intimidate them ...and, if needs be, attack them too. It was a dangerous life for both him and Joe. But Cass was still a dog, an animal that could trust, please, frustrate, infuriate, delight and - in the end - break your heart.

Well, I'm a bit of a Heathen...Not much of a Book reader I'm sorry to say...usually bored to death by Chapter 2

So, I get this book as a present, because I like Dogs...and as much out of politeness, start reading it.

Well, could I put it down?...Nope!.....I enjoyed every page, a great insight, into the lives of a PC and his faithfull companion!...it was impossible not to fall in love with Cassius...and I recommend this book to all who love Dogs!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Read 31 Aug 2010
By RozziD VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
I received this book as a birthday present from someone who knows about the special little place in my heart for the German Shepherd. I began reading this book wondering if I would enjoy it at all as I have read so many stories about 'amazing dogs' that I figured it would be a sort of 'same old, same old' book. However, I absolutely loved Cassius and now realise that I got away pretty lightly with my slightly single minded Shepherd.

Cassius, as the title states, is the story of a Police Dog. It starts with the training that the police go through when training one of these beautiful, intelligent animals and goes right through his career to his retirement and beyond.

This book made me laugh out loud in places and cry in others.

It is a great story - sometimes from the point of view of his handler - PC Joe Sleightholm - and sometimes form the point of view of Cass himself. It gives the reader some understanding of the level of total trust that police officer and dog have in each other and how they deal with the problems of dealing with crime and staying one step ahead of the criminals.

Fantastic book - highly recommended.

Format:Hardcover
Enjoyed the book very much, liked the details of how the dog reacted to the training, and if you love german shepherd dogs, it just proves how intelligent they are.I liked the police language, not too politically correct!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable book for GSD lovers 26 Jan 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased this book because firstly I love dogs and secondly because I owned a longhair German Shepherd dog myself, who looked very much like Cassius. Sadly, he passed away unexpectedly whilst I was reading the book. To review the book I have to say that at times the story line jumped around a bit, but I still enjoyed it. It brought an insight into the training of police dogs and the one down side to this book, is that there are no photos, apart from the lovely one on the cover. I think a few photos of Cassius, or any police dog, in action/training would have been a benficial addition.
It is an enjoyable book, easy to read without being sentimental

5.0 out of 5 stars What a truly wonderful dog
I chose this rating because only the five star would be right for a truly wonderful story of a loyal police dog. I did not want the story to end and was very sad the way it did. Read more
