5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, 15 Aug 2007
I bought The Casket Letters on the strength of some good reviews elsewhere. Despite this, I was still surprised quite how good this album is. From the delicate acoustic musings of opening track "Statutory Rights" to the achingly dreamy final track, "When the Work is Done", it somehow manages to be both cohesive and varied throughout. Highlights for me include the majestic "Elizabeth and Mary", the lyric of which is based on the circumstances surrounding the letters supposedly written by Mary Queen of Scots (which provided the album's name), and Bloodline, which must surely be released as a single at some point, as it has "hit" written all over it.

Although the album covers a lot of ground musically, one thing that remains constant is the voice of lead singer Nat Johnson, who has a voice so disarmingly soothing that it almost shields against the sometimes dark lyrical themes running through the album. Of course, that's not to belittle the contribution made by the rest of the band who play an impressive array of instruments between them in order to provide the perfect arrangement of each song.

I can't recommend this album enough. It's certainly my album of 2007 so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be a lot more famous than they are, 16 Sep 2007
The band with the worst name in popular music return with an absolute cracker. Engaging and beautifully crafted throughout, with only the throwaway 'Matterhoney' seeming a little out of place (but that's really only because the rest of the album is so good).

Carefully plucked acoustic guitars, cellos and recorder solos abound, but there's too much substance to the songs to call them twee, and MSTU are just as good at doomy atmospherics as evidenced by the great but rather sinister sounding 'Elizabeth and Mary'.

If you buy an album by an act you've never heard of this year, you could do a lot worse than this one

5.0 out of 5 stars Contender for album of the year, 2007, 13 Sep 2007

(REAL NAME)
If you like literate folky pop with gorgeous tunes then this is for you. Not an even remotely duff track on the album. Nat Johnson's vocals are classy and the music has a lovely restrained quality - less is more, apart from Elizabeth and Mary where MSTU seem determined to show us they can't be pigeon-holed as quietists. Stand out tracks: 'Bloodline' (a beautifully crafted song driven along by a really tight rhythm and swathed in strings); the closer, 'When the work is done' (a gorgeous great lullaby of a song) and, my favourite, 'Little Polvier', released during the summer of 2007 as a single. This is a perfect bitter-sweet summer pop song that in any sane world would have been a summer smash (maybe vying with Fanfarlo's 'Fire Escape' and Gruff Rhys' 'Candylion' for the number one spot). This is a wonderful, uplifting, life-affirming CD and you should buy it!
