£4.98 in Staples in August 2009. At that price, no contest.

I still have Casio's that are 30 years old - still going strong. They've not changed much in that time - because they had it right first time around - the key action is perfect and totally reliable.

The natural display is a real step forward though.

Why have I bought new ones? The kids need their own now - mine are still going strong and have stood the test of dropping and general use and abuse over a long time.

Down sides? The slide on cover is a little fiddly. I don't think these ones will last 30 years, they don't seem quite so robust.

A bargain price for a great calculator that has lasted me long. Great for maths exams. The buttons are very easy to press and read. The calculator is the right size to fit in any regular size pencil case. Made out of good quality materials. I have had the calculator for just over a year a bought it from Staples. Has all the things you need for a maths or science test or exam. Buy it if you would like a great calculator for any functions you wish! Comes with good tips on the calculator case. Eg Statistics and Basic Operations.

For an old fogey like me who can remember when personal calculators were first launched (huge clunky things with LED displays that could do the 4 basic functions and not much else) it seems almost impossible that you can now spend less than £10 and get a powerful machine like this.....! But you can. This is a highly versatile and very reasonably priced machine that will comfortably cover GCSE or Scottish Standard Grade maths.

This calculator is great for anyone starting secondary school, the buttons are easy to understand, and easy to use, it even includes a variety of different settings for different kinds of questions.
I would highly recommend this to anyone starting secondary school.

A great quality calculator that does nearly everything you could hope for in secondary school and college. If you're at a higher level you may consider getting a higher end CASIO calculator - for example: FX-115ES Advanced Scientific Calculator (Advanced Scientific Calculator). This calculator can perform calculus and solve quadratic and cubic equations so if you want to spend the extra money then go for this!

The FX83ES, however, is still a great little machine and a great quality product. Despite most people in my school owning one I have never seen one break despite the daily wear and tear of school-life. I even spilt coffee on mine and it survived!

Overall a great product for secondary education and I would recommend it to anyone!

This has great functionality for the price and the display is nice and easy to read for eyes that aren't as young as they used to be.
only caveat is that at some point I pressed some button such that simple multiplication involving decimals didn't work any more but just gave me an answer in long division form. I'm not sure how/why it did this and it took much random button pressing to get it back working properly (it's done this twice in first 3 days of having it) but other than that it's fine, as long as this doesn't happen on a regular basis.

Although I haven't tried the new model of the Casio calculator range, the Casio fx-83ES is outstanding quality.
The display is sharp and clear and has the ability to be manually lightened and darkened. The buttons are clear to understand and work with an easy touch (i.e. you don't have to apply much pressure to enter the digit). The rounded nature of the digits that appear on screen make the calculator feel modern and new rather than the standard 7 segment display.

I'm not too sure but I think you can also get the version of this calculator to work on solar power too, but I have the standard on/off button function which works a dream since it automatically switches itself off if unused for about five minutes.

The most impressive feature of this calculator has got to be its battery life. I have had this calculator for almost four years now and not once have I needed to change its battery. You may think that maybe I haven't used it much, but this calculator is used for about five days a week as I am currently studying Advanced Higher Maths.

This calculator also includes a lid which you can easily slide on and off protecting the buttons and screen very effectively. As a school student, I would recommend this to anyone who needs a scientific calculator. Whether you need it for simple sums or working out a logarithmic function, this is definitely the option to go with.

Covers all of the main functions and probably much more. The display is clear and bright and seems to draw very little power, judging by the very long battery life. The slip-on cover (which probably ought to be described as a clip-on cover) offers hard protection, allowing you to throw the calculator in a bag/briefcase with little concern for what damage keys, etc might do.
