Casio CTK-4200 Digital Keyboard

If you're serious about learning to play the keyboard, the Casio CTK-4200 is an ideal choice. Packed with hundreds of high-quality sounds and backing styles together with some useful features for learning about music, this instrument will inspire any music student to enjoy performing and composing.

The CTK-4200 has its own stereo speaker system and can also be played using headphones. A USB socket is included to connect the keyboard to a computer or tablet. You can also use a portable music player with the CTK-4200 and play along to your favourite songs.

Connect an optional footswitch and it is possible to produce sustain effects, which is essential for exploring the basics of piano-style playing. A power adapter is included and the keyboard will also run on six AA batteries. At 4.3kg, the instrument is light enough to take anywhere.

Live Performance Features

The CTK-4200 includes a number of features that help you to produce more professional-sounding performances right away. Music Presets set the keyboard up for you; just choose from any of the 305 song suggestions and a suitable sound and backing style is selected automatically, allowing you to concentrate on making music. Registration Memories can remember 32 of your favourite sound and backing style combinations even after you switch the keyboard off.

A built-in Chord Book shows you how to play any chord, displaying the correct notes on the LCD screen. Auto Harmonize adds extra notes to your melodies, creating a fuller and more professional sound.

Music Production Tools

The CTK-4200 is also a great introduction to the world of music technology. Budding music producers will love the exciting synthesizer-based features: the Chord Arpeggiator creates up to 90 different note patterns and is perfect for exploring electronic music styles.

Plug a microphone or any portable music player into the keyboard and you can use Audio Sampling to transform your voice or a favourite song clip into an extra sound or drum beat.

The keyboard also has a 6-track Song Recorder that can be used to record and edit your performances. You can also write your own drum beats or accompaniment tracks using the Rhythm Editor. You can also edit or remix any of the keyboard's accompaniment styles if you wish.

Music Lessons and Games

The CTK-4200 includes Casio's Step Up Lesson function which shows you how to play any of the 110 built-in songs. You don't need any prior musical knowledge to start: just follow the guides on the LCD screen and listen to the spoken instructions to find the right notes. Each song is taught in small sections at first, gradually building up to a complete performance.

In addition to the Step Up Lessons, the Music Challenge game helps you improve your note finding skills on the keyboard.

Main Features

CTK-4200 Piano-Shaped Keys
The CTK-4200 LCD screen

61 full-size, touch sensitive keys - The keys on the CTK-4200 are the same size and shape as those on a traditional piano. This is important for learning and encourages the correct hand shape and finger positions. Touch sensitive keys respond differently depending on how hard or softly you play a note, giving you greater control over the sound.

There are 600 sounds to choose from when playing a melody. Two different sounds can be layered together and the keyboard can be split, meaning that the lower half of the keyboard has a different sound to the upper half. The CTK-4200 also has drum kit sounds and sound effects that can be played using the keys.

The CTK-4200 has 180 accompaniment styles that can provide your own backing band; adding drums, bass and other instruments to your performance automatically. As well as those provided, you can write up to 10 accompaniments of your own. Each accompaniment style has two variations together with an introduction and ending.

One Touch Presets make finding sounds easy. Select any accompaniment style and the One Touch Preset will select a suitable melody sound for you automatically.

A large, backlit LCD display shows all the essential information you need, such as which sound and accompaniment style is selected. All these settings can be changed at the press of a button. The display also shows the notes you play as musical notation or chord symbols.

A dedicated Piano / Organ button makes it easy to find a Piano or Organ sound quickly.

Adjustable effects enable you to change the character of the keyboard's sound. Digital Reverbmakes your music sound as if it is being played in a concert hall, whilst Chorus gives each sound a modern, electronic quality.

The Transpose feature makes it possible to play a song in any key, which is perfect for accompanying singers or other instruments.

The CTK-4200 includes different Chord Modes. Complete beginners will enjoy being able to play chords with just one finger whilst experienced players can switch to full chord mode for more advanced harmonies, including variable bass notes.

The built-in Metronome can be used to help you play in time with the beat.

A USB socket lets you connect the keyboard to a compatible computer or tablet. With additional software it is possible to compose, print and record your own music using the CTK-4200.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
We've owned a Casio keyboard for about 20 years, it's given excellent service and has always sounded good. So it was interesting to hear what this new one sounded like - we have not been disappointed. The various instrument sounds it makes are not bad. It's touch sensitive and enables you to change expression just by pressure. There's a good bank of rhythms to play along to. Some 500 different tones and a piano / organ button. It will record you and you can extend its versatility by connecting to a computer with relavent software (though not done this). This is a very enjoyable instrument to play. It comes with it's power pack and music rest, though no foot peddle. For beginners, there is a teaching tool you can sign up to that is said to be very good.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This keyboard has over 100 different modes, but the piano is probably the one you will use the most, and fortunately it sounds wonderful. I'm old enough to remember when the tinny bleep that came out of these things was a laughable digital approximation of what a real piano sounded like. The sound quality of this keyboard deserves five stars, even if I have given it only four stars overall.

The keys respond to a very light touch, with hardly any resistance, which is nothing like a real piano. Indeed, I might go so far as to say they feel a little flimsy. I was a little wary of being too vigorous on the attack, but that might be because I simply have more experience of real keys. That said, the keyboard didn't receive any damage despite several direct assaults from the cat (the briefest of which occurred when the keyboard was turned on at the time).

As well as displaying which mode you're in, the screen highlights which key you are pressing on a map of the keyboard, and also plots the specific note on the staves displayed for both treble and bass clefs. This would certainly be handy for beginners learning to read music, helping them to find notes, but in the longer term could also prove a little too tempting to rely upon rather than learning to sight-read.

The keyboard has dozens of pre-programmed songs to play along with, but it's difficult to hear your own playing in the mix. Two songbooks come in the box, with most of the songs aimed at intermediate-level players, but with some more challenging pieces as well. And yes, the box also contains a mains adaptor, even if it says on the outside that it doesn't.

As with all instruments, if you can try before you buy, do.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I obtained this on a whim really as I wanted to teach myself musical theory and also to learn some tunes. This keyboard is brilliant and I would throughly recommend it. At it's most basic it's a very efficient keyboard, however it will allow you to do much more then simply play music. The screen tells you exactly what note you are playing and where it appears on the grand staff. It will also teach you how to play tunes, the keyboard comes with a very large library of tunes and it will teach you how play them step by step. If I had one criticism then I would say that the pure scale of buttons on options can be a little intimidating and reading the instructions first will help. If you want a basic keyboard and you will only use it for the keyboard then I'm sure there are more cheaper, more basic ones out there. However this is a keyboard that will help you learn efficiently and at your own pace. It takes me forever to learn new things and so going back and repeating lessons is helpful, it will only move on when you are ready. It is also very lightweight and, despite it's size, it very easy to transport.

I love it! The very best choice for the first piano! Build-in lessons literally replacing the tutor.
