Amazon.co.uk Review

Contemporary jazz, smooth jazz, jazz lite: call it what you will, Casino Lights 99 will fulfil any taste you may have for that kind of funky, groove-oriented instrumental music (with a couple of vocals thrown in for good measure). Filmed at Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Festival in 1999, the concert (also available on CD) features some of the genre's best players, like pianist Bob James and guitarist Larry Carlton, both of whom appear with their own bands, backing other musicians, and with their group Fourplay. Also on hand are keyboardist George Duke, saxophonists Kenny Garrett, Boney James, Kirk Whalum, and Mark Turner, and trumpeter Rick Braun. The performances are all good; these fellows can play, and singers Kevin Mahogany and Gabriela Anders are no slouches either.

The problem lies in the material. Aside from Miles Davis's "Four" (played by Fourplay), the standard "Old Folks" (Turner), and a couple of others, most of what passes for tunes is little more than riff-heavy, melody-free jamming--and that includes two hoary classics, Eddie Harris's "Cold Duck Time" (played here by Carlton) and Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" (the closing number, played by just about everybody). The simple truth is that listening to (and watching) some guy get down with his funky horn again and again gets old over the course of two hours. But then, perhaps you had to be there. --Sam Graham, Amazon.com

This star studded concert is a must for all true fusion jazz lovers. To see the likes of Bob James, Kirk Whalum, Rick Braun, Boney James & Fourplay to mention a few is nothing short of a masterpiece. The quality of sound and visual has to be commended also - Absolutely Brilliant.

I have certainly had my money's worth and will not grow tired watching this extravaganza.

What can I say but superbbbbbbb, bass-slaping, funky sax-solo'es and keybordplay like only Geroge Duke and Bob James can play it. The music varies from funk to fusion jazz to melow Boney James for everyone to understand. The sound on this dvd is superb, you dont need the 2-cd if you have this. Thers a lot of dusty boring jazz dvd's out there, this one is a keeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazon Review Is Terribly Misguided, 22 Aug 2001
By Big Rob - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Casino Lights '99 [DVD] [2001] (DVD)
I am astonished that Sam Graham from Amazon.com is reviewing a jazz performance! Not to be too harsh but you missed the point guy! The whole structure of Jazz is to JAM and these players turn it out full steam ahead! Listen to the early guys that wrote the real stuff; Coltrane, Bird, Ellington,Miles for heaven sake, it was not all melody. There is a thing in Jazz called improvisation, and that is what is happening on the CASINO LIGHTS '99 DVD. A Jazz student could study this recording for a long time with all the different musical creations that take place on it. Check out some of the lines George Duke is playing behind some of the solos! Besides, it is great to see Kirk Whalum playing just as good as Garrett, and Boney demonstrates some serious ability here as well. Finally a few of the smooth jazz guys are letting the world know that they can play too! BUY THIS DVD you wont regret it! These are some of the most respected players alive today, and sorry Sam, if you didn't like this recording you must not like Jazz.

This is an excellent DVD. The Bob James Trio, Kenny Garrett plays "Wayne's Thang" and clears the stage. It is excellent, fourplay (the original 4), Larry Carlton, Boney James, George Duke it is like the who's who of jazz on one DVD.

Simply Brilliant! Worth the price just to watch Gabriela sing Fire of Love (10). Bob James and Fourplay are the icing on the cake!
