Amazon.co.uk Review

Director Martin Scorsese reunites with members of his GoodFellas gang (writer Nicholas Pileggi; actors Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Frank Vincent) for a three-hour epic about the rise and fall of mobster Sam "Ace" Rothstein (De Niro), a character based on real-life gangster Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal. (It's modelled on Wiseguy and GoodFellas and Pileggi's true crime book Casino: Love and Honour in Las Vegas.) Through Rothstein, the picture tells the story of how the Mafia seized, and finally lost control of, Las Vegas gambling. The first hour plays like a fascinating documentary, intricately detailing the inner workings of Vegas casinos. Sharon Stone is the stand out among the actors; she nabbed an Oscar nomination for her role as the voracious Ginger, the glitzy call girl who becomes Rothstein's wife. The film is not as fast-paced or gripping as Scorsese's earlier gangster pictures (Mean Streets and Good Fellas) but it's still absorbing. And, hey--it's Scorsese! --Jim Emerson

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Movie, 26 Mar 2003
This review is from: Casino [DVD] [1996] (DVD)
Casino is a great movie and is by far better than Goodfellas. The movie takes place in the Seventies and Eighties. It follows the story of Sam 'Ace' Rothstein (Robert De Niro) who is sent to Las Vegas to run the Tangiers Casino, which the mob have acquired through the Teamsters Union. Rothstein got his nickname by being an ace gambler who never loses at all when he places a bet. It doesn't take very long for the casino to start generating huge amounts of cash but things don't go very well after the arrival of Ace's friend, Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci) who is a violent gangster who wants to get his hands on Las Vegas in order to make himself rich. His burglaries and killings interest the Police and the FBI and they start to keep a watch on him everywhere. Rothstein is having his own problems with his wife (Sharon Stone) and everything begins to break apart by the end of the movie. On the DVD there is the original Theatrical Trailer and production notes and cast and crew notes. The DVD is great and any fan of Robert De Niro or Martin Scorsese should buy it.

Casino was another helping of the finest acting. all of the characters were excellect, De Niro again didnt fail in empressing me. The story line was awsome, full of quirky lines and little surprises along the way (a little violence of course). although i dont think this film was as good as goodfellas i was still very impressed over all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why slate this film?, 14 Feb 2003

To say that Casino isn't as good as Goodfellas is quite simply a miscarriage of justice. Those who were involved in Goodfellas are improved: De Niro is able to front the film and play to his strengths, rather than backing up Ray Liotta as he had in Goodfellas. Joe Pesci is the same evil he portrayed in the earlier film, but far better, I personally think his performance in Casino is more deserving of the Oscar he won in 1991 for Goodfellas for best supporting actor. Sharon Stone is absorbing as Ginger McKenna, who finds herself unable to resist De Niro's marriage offer, contrary to what perhaps she really wants. This film isn't as cosy as Goodfellas, you cannot relate to Casino in the same way as the former. It wasn't as fast-paced as Goodfellas, but was longer, louder, more colourful, more violent, more full of obscenities, but most importantly, contained stronger performances from all involved. Frank Vincent and James Woods stand out in a well acted supporting cast.
I love Goodfellas, it is a great film, but people should acknowledge that Casino is an epic film; gritty, brutal, real, and every bit as good as, if not better, than it's much heralded predecessor.
