BBC Review

Guy Farley's soundtrack for cult short-turned-award-winning feature Cashback is sweet, sensitive, subtle and sophisticated. Hauntingly gorgeous to boot, it also serves to confirm him as one of the most promising film composers to have emerged in the last decade.

Cashback began life as a quirky 19-minute short in 2004, won awards at 15 international film festivals and picked up an Oscar nomination. That success, and the support of a sizeable online fan base, led to a much-anticipated feature-length version. And, happily, to Farley's delightfully beautiful score.

There's something tantalisingly disembodied about this diaphanous, gossamer-light music. Which is appropriate enough, given the film charts the life of broken-hearted, insomnia-stricken Ben, who kills time by working the late-night shift at his local supermarket, where his artistic, sleep-deprived imagination begins to run wild.

Farley's score employs a 45-piece orchestra augmented by hypnotically mournful slivers of solo piano and exotic chime and percussion overdubs. Shimmering, moonlit, lovelorn high strings are to the fore, with rumbling low-pitched bass forces providing a disconcerting undercurrent that ebbs and flows as the emotional temperature changes to almost narcotic effect.

Especially admirable is Farley's willingness to imbue the domestic and the mundane with something approaching heroic (but never overstated) grandeur and to imbue the whole with a touching (but never sentimental) tenderness. Full of interesting ideas and evocative touches, it exerts a darkly melodic, quietly mesmeric pull.

Farley's classically-accented score is complemented by a cleverly eclectic handful of songs. Highlights include feisty 60s soul girl-group, The Gypsies' Jerk It, Grand Avenue's intoxicating, gravity-free ballad She, Swedish indie outfit The Concretes with the bustling, brass-laden You Can't Hurry Love (no, thnankfully, not a cover of that one!), UK duo Evil 9's breakbeat-laced Snack Bar Lounge, and Malente's magnificent Funk the Rich. --Michael Quinn

CD Description

* The tale of an art student working in a supermarket whose imagination runs wild was extended to a feature length film in 2007 to popular and critical acclaim. Writer director Sean Ellis utilises all his experience as a leading fashion photographer to bring together stunning visuals with a very original soundtrack approach. The music for the film features an eclectic mix of musical styles which range from operatic arias, a classically influenced score by Guy Farley and cutting edge contemporary music

I got this soundtrack mainly because I loved the movie "Cashback", especially the magical ending.

Track 15 is the beautiful song played at the end of the movie "Cashback" - it's an orchestral remix done by Guy Farley of the song "She" by Grand Avenue (a Dutch band). I had gotten the band's CD "Outside" by mistake, since the original song appears on that CD - the original song has this annoying hum in the beginning that is less noticeable in the remix, and the remixed song is also much better with the addition of all the string instruments.

Track 14 is the short piano sequence at the art gallery scene at the end of the movie, right before the remixed "She".

Track 1 is the opera song that starts the movie.

Tracks 4 and 8 are beautiful orchestral pieces.

Track 9 is from the "Gladiator" soccer scene in the movie and has a recognizable riff from both the "Gladiator" theme and Holst's "The Planets". Pretty solemn, until you remember the hilarious part in the movie it came from.

Most of the songs have a deeply contemplative orchestral quality - I was a bit surprised how moody these were - the movie itself has so many funny moments that you don't notice that the music background is quite moody and reflective. The last five tracks are rock songs from various bands.

Overall, this soundtrack is really beautiful, especially if you loved the movie.

Currently, Amazon doesn't list this soundtrack CD on its U.S. or Canadian sites, which is why I ended up getting it here on the UK site.

I started with buying a copy of the movie DVD after having rented it and liking it well enough to want a personal copy. That was last summer (2009). It was easy for me to find a copy on amazon.com here stateside.

But the DVD wasn't quite enough - I also needed the music from this movie, and that wasn't as easy as I first thought. I couldn't find the 'soundtrack' anywhere online, until I realized that amazon.co.uk would most likely have it. And they did!

The vast majority of movie soundtracks meet their basic requirement without ever being noticed as 'stand alone' works of musical art. THIS soundtrack truly stands out! Not only does it BEAUTIFULLY enhance every aspect of the movie's storyline, it's a true musical delight all by itself.

Guy Farley should be noted for creating such an imaginative and poetic assembly of musical 'vignettes' each enhancing the development of a scene or evoking the appropriate 'atmosphere' to complete the setting for given visual moments throughout this 'gem' of a film.

The London Metropolitan Orchestra was recorded in 'real' space and time much to my delight, and I'm sure others have noticed this too. I found this CD to be truly an 'audiophile' delight with REAL acoustic instruments making the kinds of emotive sounds on a large scale that synthesizers can not really duplicate acoustically. Right down to the slight "grunt" in the air (almost like a soft sigh) when perhaps half a hundred bows simultaneously strike the strings of their respective intstruments at the very same moment in time and space. The struck strings of a grand piano leaving shimmering notes hanging delicately in the air much like the emotions of the movie's characters frozen in time. A number of the 'pop' songs appear in various places, more as additions to the background setting than forefront 'music' as the more 'classical' music of the movies themes are. But it all works to complete success.

It's such a wonderful listening experience apart from the movie itself, that I felt the need to find a copy and would offer my enthusiastic recommendation right here!

FIVE STARS for this delightful CD!!!!!

Guy Farley isn't very famous in general and even between Soundtrack lovers, there are few who know have heard his name, let alone be familiar with his work.
Well his score for the movie Cashback is just mindblowing. It puts your mind to ease with the most mesmerizing simplicity. As always, I do recommend watching the movie first, this way the songs have way more meaning. Movie (Drama, Romance, Comedy) and the album (Soothing, peaceful) will not let you down.
